I spent back-to-back summers at Al-Udeid, 2006 and 2007. Walking outside during the day is like being in a convection oven full of sand. At night it was like a giant sauna. But the pay is good and you have very little to spend it on, so contractors come back after a year or 2 with a lot of money in the bank.

60hr work weeks might seem like a lot but the average military guy there works a 72hr work week (6 days on, 1 off, 12hr shifts).

General Dynamics is a good company to work for as well. And as a contractor I'm sure the quality of life amenities are ok and you'll be able to go to Doha and escape the daily grind on your days off. When I was there I was in the military so I was just grateful to be in a safe place in the rear and not downrange getting shot at.

Just got back from the Deid. Off base is nice and j went every chance I had. Lots of things to do and beautiful women to look at. Driving seems crazy, so it's a good thing you'll et transportation. Lots of things to spend money on over there as its a very nice city and they are building it up like crazy. If I had any sort of certs or degree I would be trying to hope on this as its like a mini vacation for me while I was there.

Yeah, I hadn't considered that. As a military guy there you're stuck on base most of the time.

If I were to go back as a contractor I'd spend my money getting the hell out of Qatar every chance I got.

Qatar is not a bad place to be, and GDIT is a great company to work for. Take the opportunity to see the world and bank some money while you're there. :) GDIT also has positions all over the states that you can transfer laterally into (assuming you match the qualifications, won't transfer from sysadmin1 in Qatar to Sr Network Engineer in Fairfax, VA ;) ) after you've decided you've spent enough time over there.

To the OP, did this job require a TS clearance? Seems almost all of their IT jobs require TS/SCI

no top secret for the jobs i'm speaking of, I had a secret that expire last year and they accept me with that. everyone needs to look under GDIT.com instead of just generaldynamic.. joelsfood is right, i plan on staying out there 2 years and come back with them states side. they are one of the biggest IT government contractors.

A few more questions about housing.... Do you get to bring your car with you? Are you on the base, or just outside? Are there curfews? Are there restrictions on guests? I know Qatar has a ban on anything pornographic or bacon/beef related, is there anything else similar to that to be aware of?
