Thanks! I haven't done any type of local meet-ups yet. I've actually been trying to create an infosec group with another poster here but we've been pretty busy. So far I've pretty much stuck to job sites, Linkedin, and networking through former bosses/co-workers.

That's sounds like the gov selection process. The longest someone told me was about 6 months.

Oh Im aware lol. I have a buddy who works for TSA. He was Navy EOD and applied for his job 3 months before getting out. He interviewed 4 times and 2 years later he finally got the job

@Tomkotech, GS position? That's actually normal, I've known some people to go 12-18 months between the first interview and actually starting. The fact you made it as far as you did though is a good sign. Most people I know in that position will continue looking around if they're in the job market, but jump on the GS position as soon as they get the call back.

Yeah I am in a good position at the company I work for. My boss knows I have been applying solely for gov't jobs. When/if I get one offered he is aware he will need to replace me. But I'm not in a hurry to move on.

Are you applying through LinkedIn/JobSites, or are you finding the jobs there then going to the companies website and applying for the job on the company page? You might have a little more luck with the latter.

Kind of both. Majority of the jobs are advertising on Linkedin I have to apply on their actual company website. I should probably try to do that as a rule though.

What's the worst part about help desk? I will be starting a job in help desk in two weeks. I applied originally because the job asked for desktop support so I thought more hands on but during the interview hr mentioned it was help desk.

The back to back inbound calls with no break. It'd be easier to deal with though if I was doing actual troubleshooting

@TomkoTech oh okay. WOW 2 years probably the longest I heard so far. I've read at least a 6 months to 1 I believed the 6 months but the year for me was pushing it. Apparently its quite common, man they sure are slow.

@Markulous apologies for the hijack. I hope things work out for you. I'm playing a waiting game myself I received a call for 2 jobs interviewed for one and was told they wanted a " in person" interview sometime this week. Although I haven't heard anything. The other job I have yet to interview for but the recruiter claims I should get a call "soon" this week. The waiting game sucks doesn't it?icon_wink.gif I'm ready to leave my current job ASAP. Oh well in the mean time studying up for more certs.

These interviews are awful. I hate explaining about my current job situation. It's like when you get into a new relationship and she starts asking you about your ex. In that instance I can just avoid it or be dismissive, but in this scenario I have to be so transparent and I come off like a jerk complaining about his job. At least that's the vibe I get from them. Seems like there's a lack of empathy there and they can't understand how bad it is.

I know how hard it is to word what you are going through in a job without sounding like a fool. I usually say I am looking for new challenges or something along that line and leave it at that.

The new challenges would work after the 6 month range probably. But after only a month it raises a lot of red flags. I'm also pretty honest in interviews and have a hard time keeping a poker face since there's so much pressure I feel.
  • TomkoTechTomkoTech Member Posts: 438
Just be honest. When they bring it up you explain that the position is not what you were lead to believe it would be. You don't feel that the actual duties utilize your natural level of ingenuity and work culture, thus you experiencing feelings of under utilization and morale issues.

Say it is a temporary contract. That is what I did when I needed to leave a job after 3 months (the job was totally different from what I interviewed for).

Eh, I don't know about lying. Especially if they do a background check and they contact my previous employers.
  • scaredoftestsscaredoftests Mod Posts: 2,780 Mod
The check is only to see if you work/ed there. They don't go into specifics of what went on.

Got a call for this job. https://www.ziprecruiter.com/jobs/professional-bureau-of-collections-of-maryland-inc-02c3d951/it-systems-administrator-432982ee?widgetlink=1

The range is 50-60, which kinda seems odd as a full blown Sys admin. But I'm going to meet with them tomorrow. My tech support job at VMware paid more so maybe the responsibilities aren't too crazy. I'm not sure if I have the experience to take over an entire environment by myself and if so, I'm not sure I'd do it for that pay.

Thanks. I just hope it's a decent gig. If it's a paycut and no work/life balance I don't know if I can take it. I can't just ditch this for any job that calls my name as I don't want to be in a similar situation.

Interview went well. I unofficially got the job, we just have to agree on salary. The range is 50 to 60 and I initially said mid 60s. They said they'd be hard to pay me 60 since I don't have a ton of experience. I said the minimum would be 57500. Work life balance seems good for what they told me and I get my hands on everything and even compliance and auditing. Its just me and one other guy so it'd be a good opportunity.

57K was the offer so I took it. I am excited about what technologies I get to touch. As long as they are honest about the work life balance I think it's about the best job I can ask for.

Congratulations! Is that salary in line with what you were making before or is it a bump? How old are you? Seems a bit too low for the certs you have and the experience gained so far. Maybe your short stints hurt you a bit.
  • markulousmarkulous Member Posts: 2,394 ■■■■■■■■□□
It's around the same as what I was making but it's a 20 minute drive opposed to a 90 minute drive so gas, time, and wear and tear are definitely a factor.

It probably is a bit on the low side foe how much responsibility it is but I don't really have a ton of experience. 2.5 years total IT and probably half of that was mostly end user help desk. A year or two of doing this and I'm going to have a MUCH stronger resume but there also seems like good opportunities here possibly.

That will absolutely be the case, you will have a stronger skill set and resume in the next 2 years. If the company is a good fit for you,you could stay there for 3-4 for years, maybe get promoted or get few raises, few new certs, once you reach your peak in that environment you could be making a lot more after that.

Agreed. Being a sys admin, network admin, auditing, compliance, etc, I should be able to get my salary up quite a bit in the near future and be more marketable.

icon_lol.gif I'm cautiously optimistic for them this year. We have a good offense and our defense should be a good deal better
