Why Are Cisco Switches In 24 ports or 48 ports

First thought that comes to mind for the 48s is that it just maximizes available space. 40 ports would leave too much blank space in that face plate.

The higher the port density, the better. I'm no engineer, but my guess is that historically hubs, then switches were designed in multiples of 4 and 8. 48 was the most they could fit in a blade.

Probably. It also might be based on ASIC distribution as well.
