New Job

Like many others recently, I was offered a new job. It's about 7K more than I'm currently making which will be nice. It's a Sys Admin position and I'd be the sole IT person. The only thing that slightly worries me is that I would be giving up flexibility such as working different hours if I need to pick up my kids and also I have to shave - no facial hair at all. I've always had a goatee.
I do think it's a step in the right direction tho in advancing my career and skills. More responsibilities, more money, and a much larger IT budget. I'm currently at a non-profit and we are millions in debt, so it's difficult getting money to buy things that are needed.
What do you guys think? What would you do?

Kidding, as someone has been the lone IT person before I think it is definitely good experience wise. Congratz! -

Verities Member Posts: 1,162It sounds like a good move to me. If you have a significant other or relative that can pick up your kids, you may want to talk with them about working out a schedule. Also, if you bring up your concern with the potential employer, they're more likely to be flexible with you in terms of leaving to pick up your kids from childcare/school. Perhaps they could adjust your working hours?

I think I can get used to shaving but my wife always liked it. Unfortunately they're pretty strict on the hours. They really want someone on site during business hours. They did say they are ok with me leaving early occasionally if needed, so that's nice. I did ask my parents if they're ok watching the kids so that's taken care of.
It also sounds like a great place to work. The people seem to love it. It's a family owned business. -

Bokeh Member Posts: 1,636 ■■■■■■■□□□Oh I agree, stay out of politics with family owned businesses.
I worked for one for 5 yrs, till they got bought out. We were constantly told about their politics, religious beliefs, etc. The real kicker is when we had company meetings, and the owner INSISTED that donuts provided be cut in half so they would stretch further. When the bakery didn't get the order in time and ran out ... Well I &h!t you not, she bought donut holes and made the admin girls cut those in half!!!
Good luck on the new job! -

gespenstern Member Posts: 1,243 ■■■■■■■■□□No way I'm shaving my goatee for 7k increase. I have a pretty sensitive skin on my face so whenever I shave I get a serious irritation and red skin for a day or two.
But I can do this for 70k increase, sure. -

vanillagorilla3 Member Posts: 79 ■■■□□□□□□□Thanks everybody, but there's been an update. Another place I interviewed for offered me the position as well. They had a guy quit after a few days and I was their second choice. It'll be the same pay as the other job and it sounds much better. Emergency daycare, paid training, an ice cream machine, and plus I don't have to shave.
So how do you let the other job down? Just simply tell them I've accepted another offer? -
