I currently live in California and must recruiters whom call me are only offering me contract positions which I am not interested in. Then the other times I get calls from Recruiters from out of state phone numbers whom have thick foreign accents.
Is anyone else having these problems from recruiters in different states. (Desktop Support positions)

fmitawaps Banned Posts: 261Yes, I get those almost daily, sometimes 4 or 5 a day. I hate them. Anything to get our money flowing to them. I hate temp agencies, but I at least want the money to stay local. The phone numbers are all over the place. Sometimes in my own area code, mostly way out of state. I despise them. The few times I let them send me in for a job, nothing ever happened.
Sometimes I imitate their accent back to them, but mostly I say "I don't talk to foreigners for jobs, don't ever call me again" and hang up. -
thomas_ Member Posts: 1,012 ■■■■■■■■□□I don't answer the phone if it's a number I don't recognize. I just wait for them to leave a voicemail and listen to it.
Over the years the number of cold calls overall has gone down quite a bit. -
TheFORCE Member Posts: 2,297 ■■■■■■■■□□I get these too all the time, usually they have an Illinois number, so now I don't even pick up.

Pmorgan2 Member Posts: 116 ■■■■□□□□□□I also got a lot of those calls. Some forums said that there are call centers in India that get paid by how many resumes they collect, not but how many jobs they place. So they just call around asking for resumes even if you aren't qualified for the job. So they say whatever they can to get you to forward your resume, which they give to the hiring agency with no intent of following up. Hopefully these places get weeded out naturally.
I feel bad for legitimate hirers who just happen to have an accent. But if I hear an accent I'm immediately skeptical. I entertain calls until:
a.) They ask me to forward my resume, even though they found me on a hiring board that has my resume.
b.) They want to talk salary before even telling me what the job is.
c.) The job description is waaay out of left field compared to my qualifications.
d.) The job is in the middle of nowhere
Do not forward your resume to them to "keep on file just in case." They're just trying to collect resumes to get paid. don't encourage them. I just hang up and block the number on my phone or forward their emails to spam. Sometimes I recognize the "company" they work for from the garbage emails or previous calls and can weed them out right away. Not all of these callers had thick accents.
It's very discouraging and I've stopped posting to job boards because of it. That's probably for the best anyway, since google will have me believe only 10% of jobs are found from a job board. I did find some legitimate IT talent scouts from the job boards, and I just worked directly with them. In the end, I got a federal job. However I did get 1 tempting offer for a contract that resulted from an unsolicited call from an IT scout. He didn't have an accent.2021 Goals: WGU BSCSIA, CEH, CHFI | 2022 Goals: WGU MSCSIA, AWS SAA, AWS Security Specialist -
Dojiscalper Member Posts: 266 ■■■□□□□□□□I get these calls too, however I did find that there is an agency that calls a lot from Atlanta and has Indian workers that seem legit. I've talked to the same two several times and am connected on LinkedIn.

tedjames Member Posts: 1,182 ■■■■■■■■□□How are they getting your phone number? I never post my number online. If someone wants to contact me, they can email me or IM me through my LinkedIn or other account. I created a Yahoo account just for job-related contacts. I never give recruiters/employees my main personal email address. Remove your phone number from all of your profiles.

ITSpectre Member Posts: 1,040 ■■■■□□□□□□I get random calls as well and spam emails from recruiters.... mainly indians who have american names. What I learned is when you put your resume and contact info on careerbuilder, monster, dice, etc... the recruiters have a system that farms those sites for resumes and contact numbers. After that, they send spam emails out to everyone in hopes that they respond. They will also spam call you to get you to answer or return their call.In the darkest hour, there is always a way out - Eve ME3

I hated that and found it very offensive. One guy literally blew up my phone for like a week straight with a potential job. The job seemed pretty amazing too I responded to him told him I was interested. 2 days later NEVER heard from him again. However this is just recruiters in general. -

Anonymouse Member Posts: 509 ■■■■□□□□□□I've been getting my email and phone blown up lately. It is annoying because it's usually short term contract and usually very far from where I live. I find that multiple people from the same agency will contact me on the same job. I wonder if they are working together or are just pretty cutthroat about it and trying to steal clients from their co-workers. Regarding thick foreign accents, I don't find anything wrong with them since being raised in a diverse area by immigrant parents makes me tolerant to people different from myself.

BradleyHU Member Posts: 918 ■■■■□□□□□□i used to get caught with this, but now I'm hip to their game. I live in NYC, and i know the area codes around here. If I get a call, and its not from a NYC, North Jerz or Western CT area code, i don't answer. I let it go to vm. They usually email me too. Most of the roles they email me for are in west bubble, and like a 3 month contract for peanuts. And in the VMs, you can hear the accent, and barely understand what they're saying, and also their phone connection is terrible, but I assume that's due to their call being routed from India to some random place here in the states over some crappy voip connection.Link Me

Iristheangel Mod Posts: 4,133 ModI always love it when I get emails for help desk I sometimes reply with my salary requirements for a good laugh.
What I've noticed with most recruiters is that they call then send an email. I don't answer numbers that I don't recognize anyways and if it's something relevant or interesting to me, at least I can see it in my email. -
ITSpectre Member Posts: 1,040 ■■■■□□□□□□I am hip to the game too. I do not answer numbers that I don't recognize. But here is a tip that I learned. Get a google voice number and put THAT on your resume... That way if you don't want recruiters to blow up your phone you can just block the number. That has cut down the amount of recurring calls I get.In the darkest hour, there is always a way out - Eve ME3

LOL, I've been thinking about sending salary requirements to help desk emails. Do they ever respond? -

ITHokie Member Posts: 158 ■■■■□□□□□□So it may be worth considering using a number that you don't actually forward to a phone. I use a google voice number on my resume that doesn't ring through to my mobile or any other phone. Voice mails are sent to my email address where I can screen them.

Iristheangel Mod Posts: 4,133 ModIf you're new to the IT field or finding it harder to get calls, posting your resume is magic. You'll get recruiters even trying to get you to relocate if there isn't stuff local to you. It definitely can help...
But if you're senior or don't find a hard time finding a job, posting your resume will create a LOT of noise.
I took all my resumes down except there must be one still floating about since I get the random calls here and there... Just been too lazy to go looking -
ITSpectre Member Posts: 1,040 ■■■■□□□□□□Is there even a way to search for jobs without your resume being on one of the sites??? Like taking my resume off Monster, carearbuilder, indeed, dice, etc.... Other then craigslist... which IDK why but I always have good success from craigslist which is why I use that more then anything when im looking for a job.In the darkest hour, there is always a way out - Eve ME3

Some of these places seem to hang onto them forever. I get people contacting me with my resume on file from almost 10 years ago at this point. Is there even a way to search for jobs without your resume being on one of the sites??? Yeah every site I've been on has an option to not make your profile public. Indeed definitely you don't even need an account to apply to jobs there. An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made. -
TranceSoulBrother Member Posts: 215It's even weirder when living overseas now and I receive calls from country codes like Senegal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal for jobs and I don't even have my resume out there. It's just that there are so many Indian expats here that some companies must go through the entire phonebook...

If you do not make your profile public that just means that employers AKA recruiters cannot search for you correct? But if I apply for jobs the employer can still see my resume right? In the darkest hour, there is always a way out - Eve ME3
