What protocol is used wit file shares on windows server?
Robbo777
Hi, I'm wondering what protocols are used when network files are transfered over the network or when say they've been placed in the user's file share (home directory) on the domain controller and are then available to for access to the user?
Protocols like FTP are obviously used to transfer files with machines that aren't apart of a domain but what about the protocols that are used with the examples I mentioned?
I don't know if it's an obvious answer or not, thanks for the info.

Windows generally uses SMB file shares.

However, if sharing with Linux boxes they will likely use NFS.

I'd say for "Windows" boxes in general, they'd still use SMB. It's a defacto standard at this point for fileshares. All because of

Windows Server that has been set up to share with Linux, then NFS is a good option.

SMB/CIFS and listens on TCP 445
