IT Job or Any Job?

(this post is not my own its made for a friend)My friend wants to know he just recently completed the contract that he is on and he needs to find another job. He has one paycheck left that he can save... he plans to move into a cheaper place and continue to search for a job... Should he only search for IT jobs or any job? Because of his resume it is technical and the last retail job he worked was a few years ago. I advised him to search for IT jobs and keep things open for any job as well. He really does not want to go back to working retail or a reg job because he worked too hard to get out of that job field only to just go back in it for the money... That is why he only wants to really focus on IT jobs and small businesses. He has a Sec+ MTA security essentials and about 3 years of help desk experience.

I would be surprised that he couldn't find any IT job with 3 years experience. Seems like there is always a bunch of lower level help desk roles to fill. Or short contract jobs. At least in my area there is. (Minneapolis)

If he can survive without being paid, that's cool. If he needs money to eat/etc, he needs to get any job to help bridge that gap. He doesn't need to put that job on his resume at all.

So he doesnt need to put the 3 month job on the resume at all??? What should be put then to bridge the gap between the ending of the one job and now??? Independent consultant?

The main reason he is looking is the 3 month contract he is on is completed. Right now he just has as his current job "Independent IT consultant" from the time he left one job till present...

I'd take up a temporary job while looking for the real job. Good to stay busy & not fall in a rut. Other alternative would be to NOT work & spend 40 hours a week developing skillsets @ home. Labs, demos, etc. Anything to build up his talent. Trick here is to make sure he actually spends 40 hours a week doing it, not watching YouTube

Is the 3 month job an IT contract? Then yes, you put it on your resume. If you are working at Quik Trip, then no. Also, he needs to note on his resume that it was a completed contract.

Did you say he is from Virginia? Plenty of job in IT around here (DC Metro area).

If he can stomach it and no current family or other obligations, go work overseas as an IT contractor. Plenty of demand and tax free money.

Should he put something like "Independent IT Consultant" on the resume? I will make sure he does that with the contract because it was a IT contract that was completed.

I don't know if it is the correct way, but on my resume I just put the position and company. Then put (Contracted through XYZ Contracting Company) in parenthesis after the position. No ones questioned it yet... Something like:

    Microsoft Corp
Systems Analyst (Contracted through XYZ Inc) Sept 2015 - Nov 2015
