a+ lab (ideal)

okay, this is kind of a general thing, so it covers the operating systems exam as well as the core.

imo, to understand the concepts of a+ via hands-on in a lab, i suggest you buy or have access to the following things (all concepts are understandable with minimal hands-on, but experience helps me understand better, i just assume it's the same for most):

build a decent spec computer from new components

get an older-spec computer (socket 7 cpu) and non-plug and play components. ebay is good for legacy components, but another thing to do would be to buy two different legacy systems and swap the parts about

get your hands on as many of the operating systems as possible covered in the exams. dualboot systems

get crossover network cable and network two computers together in a workgroup. dualbooting is fun here

feel free to add things here that you have found helpful for hands-on experience, as i am bound to have forgotten something

I think the networking part is most important. That is the only part you can't do with a single machine.

Do a clean install, upgrade install and yes, the dual boot. FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS are file systems you should understand.
I'm not a complete idiot... some parts are missing.
