Some problems with a 2610 router

goosegoose Member Posts: 4 ■□□□□□□□□□
Hey guys, I'm new to the this place and it looks like a great place to learn about Networking. I am curently studying for my CCNA and doing work experiance with my company with their networks.

The other day I decided to buy a router so that I can practice at home too. Bought a cisco 2610 router and seems to be having some issues with it. I have connected the console to my COM port and I am able to connect to HyperTerm onto the router.

Now the problem is with certain messages
Here is my sh ver can anyone see anything wrong with it?

8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

Configuration register is 0x2102

I also seem to be getting messages like this:

%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg (Not enough space)

This is how the router came, does this bean i have too little mem.. here is a copy of my flash
router2610#sh flash

System flash directory:

8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

I have tried going to conf t ... then boot buffersize and making it to the maximum, but i still get this every time I boot up and during the time I try and when I enter some commands, it spontaneously pops up.

Also how do I reset the router to default factory settings, and how do I enable copying images from an ftp server. Is it possible to do this from console or do I need to configure the router.. ip address etc to be able to do this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

goose.

Your routers is tried to load the configs from the tftp server....Although I cannot suggest on how to fix that, someone else can.
    Now working full time!

Your router is trying to load it's config files from a tftp server.
%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg (Not enough space)
%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg (Not enough space)
%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/router2610-confg (Not enough space)
%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/router26.cfg (Not enough space)

    Try this command:
    no boot system tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg
no boot system tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg so on down the line.

But if it's factory defaults you want then type erase startup-config and then the reload command or just switch the router off then on again and that ought to do the trick.[/b]

Sorry about that, I made a cock up on my post.

    Type the following:

    no boot system tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg
no boot system tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg and so on down the line.

But if it's factory defaults you want then type erase startup-config and then the reload command or just switch the router off then on again and that ought to do the trick[/b]

Ok, THANK YOU for that, it has fixed the problem and I can sleep now :) . I have erased both the startup memory the flash mem(was that a bad idea?) and the nv ram... thought I'd start fresh, good learning experience. Now I've got to tftp an image into the router I guess. Before I attempt to waste time, just wondering if this is possible to do this through the console?

I am currently sitting on this:

It wasn't a bad idea to erase flash because now your getting real practical experience.

basically your gonna want to make sure your tftp server is up, running and reachable. Your prompt reads rommon so type confreg. You get asked a bunch of questions answer them accordingly. You'll want your configuration register vlaue to be 0x2101 at the end. this takes you to the mini-ios.

    Then copy tftp://tftp_ip_address/IOS_image.bin flash
It will ask for source and destination file name and then start copying.
I haven't done this in ages but that pretty much does it

Hey good stuff there twiggy87, I was finally able to tftp a a better IOS than the previous version. I just typed in confreg 0x2102 instead of going through the questions.

Then I manually had to set an IP Address, Subnet mask and default gateway, which I basically matched with my own setting is command prompt - ipconfig. Also had to put file and tftp IP in there as well, hten run tftpdnld.. and of it went. :)

He, he, I guess that it for the day time to go bed(in Australia), I've learn't a lot today. Thanks for all your help guys. I'll be coming around here more often.
