Contractor Jobs in DC area

How hard is it for veterans with a TS/SCI clearance and a couple of certs getting a networking job out there? Considering moving out there soon , just dont know too much about DC.

You have a pulse? You can get a job. What type of certs do you have? CCNA, Net+, Sec+? I think GD for my contract has a position or 2 open out their for a basic NOC position. Just keep in mind of the contract/DoD entity taking time to verify your clearance or get you a CI poly if needed, mine took about 3 months.

How far our should i apply for it then? I get out the military in a couple of months.

Can't hurt to start applying now. Just tell them the truth that you are still in the military and what your ETS date is. Some places like to fill as soon as possible, but some like the contract I am on have hurdles to jump over during the hiring process. Most places that like to hire ASAP will keep your contact info and call every now and then to see how you are progressing and if you have a job yet or not so they can try to recruit you closer to your ETS. And speaking from Army side, ACAP requires you to "apply" to jobs during it, so may make things easier.

Yeah, with an SCI you can get a job pretty quickly. You didn't mention which certs, anything dealing with security or SOC operations is in very high demand at that level of clearance. If you put your info out on clearancejobs.com you will be getting a lot of calls without even applying for anything. I would advise to start putting out feelers now, 2 months isn't a huge amount of time. Another nice thing for contractors is that DC is a pretty transient area, so it's pretty easy to get short term housing arrangements, if that's a concern.

Definitely get your resume up on ClearanceJobs and Dice ASAP. I was receiving 5+ emails a day from recruiters about positions without lifting a finger.

You can get anything between Baltimore and NoVA with no issue. It's like the Silicon Valley of the East coast out here. If you are looking to buy a house, stay on the NoVA side as taxes are crazy in MD. The further up I-95 you go in MD, the cheaper it is. If you are renting, Columbia MD is a good area to look.

Consider all options, including gov't jobs. If you are really hard pressed to keep your TS/SCI, then stay on the contractor side. Only downside is keeping up with 8570 every 3 years (last time I checked).

And if you are lookin for something outside of the "koolaid," hit me up and let me know what you might be looking for. We also have a lot of tech companies between the DC/Balt beltways

A+ , Sec+ , CCNA, considering going for CCNP now as well.

also im wondering if any of them would bother helping you relocating lol. im coming from san diego .

From San Diego? LOL. I would love to relocate there. No jobs?

Currently reside in VA/DC area. You should have no problems getting a job with your clearance and certs. Unless the position is high salary, I'm not sure if any companies will provide relocation fee. U can go temp to perm with companies such as KForce or TekSystems. Or if you go the hook up LOCKHEED and NORTHRUP have tons of contracts out here.

orginally from the east coast lol . its nice over here but when i do job searches over and then it compare it DC area. there aint **** in SD Lol. i also i feel like most of the contractor jobs on here just work on Navy ship network , where as DC it seems you have bigger variety so theres more room to learn and grow.

edit: whats considered high salary in DC? im still a newbie to networks.. so i dont know how much i'd be able to make out there , i know a lot contractor companies like overpay people though.

Whatever you do, be sure to have something lined up before you leave else you risk your clearance becoming inactive. You don't lose it but the transition would take longer. Also be aware that not all agencies use the DOD specific system and getting data copied from DOD into something like the system State uses will add time. Most recruiters will know all of this, it's more for you to have appropriate expectations if you go to a non-DOD contract, ask questions related to this.

For entry, yeah that'd be high. At a most senior level think 120-140k. However, you'll be able to enjoy the pleasure of losing a great deal of it in state taxes on top of your fed taxes. Yayyyyyy....
