Amazon Support Engineer positions

I'm just curious, has anyone worked (or is working) at Amazon as a support engineer? If so, can you provide some thoughts on what you like/don't like etc?

So I dont but one of my Jr Engineers that left does.

Complaints: They make sure you earn every penny you own. That means sometimes hellish long hours and short project times.

Pros: She is very heavy into learning Automation and EVERYTHING at Amazon is Automated. Shutting/No Shutting ports. You name it. If you are interested in Automation that is one of the best places to be.

I was an engineer for just over 3 years in the UK ... i worked regulary over 80 hour weeks! I was burnt out by the end of it, it was one of the main reasons that i left.

From an IT point of view theres nothing technical to do, you may occasionally replace a card in the back of a router or change a few ports like mentioned above. But everything is now done via an SOP where you follow the steps through one by one.

If wanted techincal you would have to move up to a team called infra-ops (might have changed now) but i never saw anyone get a promotion into that team while i was there.

I had 2 coworkers that worked for a company that Amazon owns or something like that, and one came back SO FAST because of how much he had to work. He came back to less money.

Thanks for the replies. That is definitely way too many hours for me. I don't mind working a lot in a pinch but not 80 hours as the norm. I should clarify a bit. I was referring to their cloud support engineers. I see they have several different positions with different requirements listed. From the job descriptions I read, it looks like it is client support for cloud customers. The pay range on glassdoor for that title ranges from 57k-128k. I was thinking it may be interesting and possibly gets me into TX, which is ultimately where we are looking to move to.

If it would get you where you want to be, especially with TX being a hotbed for IT, and assuming you could stomach 6 months to a year of tough work then I would say it could be worth it just to have that name on your resume and to relocate. I'm sure you'd have no problem moving on to something else afterwards.
