I am strictly a PC guy. I acquired a mac air laptop. It has OS 10 on it. This may be a stupid question but can u update the OS like a IPhone/pad ?

Yes. Go to App Store, then to updates. It will show updates for the OS, installed Apple applications, and apps installed through the App Store. You can install all, or some.

Also in System Preferences, you can set up automatic updates.
