I use the smaller version of this bag:

It was called the Zephyr but it appears to no longer be available. You can find Tom Bihn stuff on eBay a bit cheaper some times, it's top notch quality so as long as it looks clean I would have no issues buying a used bag.

As an IT guy I think a backpack is better, you can carry more cables, converters and other stuff in it (Like a spare jacket, people that work in data-centers do that).
I use this one, I don't think you will find it in USA.

That Tom Bihn bag looks really nice! I personally will be picking up one of the briefcases from Saddleback Leather, probably this one

This is what I use for work:

A couple other guys use it also and it lasts.

I really like the 5.11 Rush 72 back pack. Only issue is that it has two drain holes at the bottom but the bag is water resistant though.

I paid 170 for mines.

I wish the fashionable ones were more functional but they are just terrible. You can never go wrong with spending solid $ on a decent backpack. Personally, I've been using a NorthFace Recon for the last few years and still love it.

Backpack. More utility and it's not in the way when I need to carry something with both hands.
I'm using a Swiss+Gear I picked up at Target. It a compartment that holds my 13.3" Sony VAIO perfectly, has lots of pockets for my cables, flash drives, and tools, and an internal compartment for books/notebooks or whatever. I think it weighed in at $79. I'll blow money on frivolous things all day long, but in this case it does the same job just as well as a $200+ bag. Just my unsolicited $0.02.
-EDIT-
I was close...$70.
