Best way to pivot from support management to technical management?

I'm wondering if anyone here has switched career paths and went from managing client support teams (Service Desk / Desktop) to more technical teams and how you would recommend setting yourself up for this. The path to swapping technical roles is vey logical but haven't seen much written around this topic. I have held senior management roles for 5+ years but have limited hands-on job experience in my past. Would proper industry experience, along with degrees/certs and proper business knowledge be enough to change courses down the road? I'm not necessarily looking to switch domains right now but trying to have a 5 year plan for myself.
