What would an employer prefer?

I have a bachelor's in a scientific field of and rather then getting a second degree (don't want to do a masters yet), I would prefer to work on certificates and work my way up. What would employers prefer the second degree or certificates? As I said I would rather just get the technical knowledge through certification but of course I don't want to miss out on job opportunities

Depends on what you're trying to do. A sysadmin role will be benefit from the certs while a project manager would benefit more from the degree (since you ave to have experience to get the PMP).

An advanced degree, unless it’s computer science, is unlikely to help you a ton compared to certifications early in your career.

What area are you trying to go into?

Me, too! How many of us are still working in our degree field?

I thought about earning a master's degree in security, but I figured I could get what I need with training and certifications. Also, I have no aspirations of getting into management, so an advanced degree would be useless for me.
