Mining

Do you guys think it is worth stepping down from a contractor junior infra role into an internal full time position with a mining company in a SD/desktop role?

It's very hard to find internal roles in mining and the pay will be more

I'm thinking its a good opportunity to work in mining for the rest of my career and work up the ladder

Do you want to be in mining, or do you want to be a sysadmin (or whatever)?

If you want to work in mining, sure, you can do that, but your upward trajectory will still be limited to tech unless you have other skills. To be a geologist, you still need geological skills. To be an engineer, you still need an engineering degree, etc.

You're just unfairly limiting yourself long-term to a subset of companies for a short-term boost in pay.

In general it's almost never worth taking a role one step down, especially if one step down means back to helpdesk. It'll never look good on your resume, despite the pay bump, and unless you have a hungry baby or a sick parent, I wouldn't do it.

This was my initial thought as well, but what I looked into it, there are some big mining companies, one with 100k employees, several with 50k+. Assuming he is working in the corporate office, and not in some trailer office on a mining site, there should be plenty of upward mobility just as any large business with IT needs.
Still searching for the corner in a round room.

Is it the mining you're interested in? Not sure they would really move you from tech to actual mining.
