please name the things that I need to configure for vmware as this is my first time using it.

Download the VMServer (it's free). VMServer allows creation of your virtula machines. I have 2003 server and 2 XP clients installed and networked together. Be sure to have plenty of memory ( 1 gig+, maybe). This setup works great for me.
