Having hard time getting out of service desk/help desk into network.. security..

technogoattechnogoat Member Posts: 73 ■■□□□□□□□□
Hello,

I"m currently working in Service desk for the past 1 1/2 years after graduating in college for a Computer Systems Technology course that focused on Network (CCNA)

I have CCNA R/S, ITIL, A+, and currently obtaining my CCNA Cyber Ops

I have a goal of working in the networking field but having problems find any jobs that accept entry level

I found a NOC that accepts entry-level candidates but waiting to hear back from them

I'm also interested in Infosec and tried some entry-level security but no avail.

Been applying to Networking, Deskside, Security, jr sysadmin and IT Specialist roles

Been applying every day for weeks and only received a few callbacks. Seems like I'm stuck working tier 1 deskside or service desk jobs.

here is my resume - please let me know what you think of it

to note, I am from Toronto, Canada

For what it's worth I would change my resume depending on what job I'm applying for. If your going for a junior network role then they will not care if you can reset a password via active directory

I have limited experience with networking equipment but I tend to change keywords and sentences to match the job ads

The Produce Worker position is irrelevant in your resume. You already have two full pages, so I would suggest getting rid of it.

I suggest making a big section titled "CERTIFICATIONS". Then list what you earned. This way, it stands out.

Will remove and also add the certification in bolder like you've stated

Holy wall-of-text! You need more white space (and fewer bullets). The purpose of a resume is to make you shine while a wall-of-text tends to make people shy away. You have way too much text about jobs that were only a few months in length. Ideally, this should be a single-page resume. To put it in perspective, I have over 20 years experience and more certs and have a two-page resume.

If you have a "core competencies" section, make it worth talking about. I would expect anyone with any experience in IT to have experience with customer service. Unless you have the competency at a high-level, it's not worth talking about. For instance, "reports and documentation". Have you been a technical editor/writer? Developed memos that went up to upper management?

Why have a "technical acumen" section separate from core competencies? Bundle them together and strike most of what you have. You list a lot of stuff that people will spend years mastering which leads me to mentally call BS. Pick five things you think you're good at that are relevant to the job you're applying for. Change them up from job to job as the situation demands.

Your summary needs work. "Highly motivated" is superfluous, no one would claim in a resume "barely motivated". "Possess a coveted skill set" is way too egotistical.

As noted, get rid of the "other" experience.

I would say just keep applying. A lot of times it's a numbers gain. You're not the only jr guy out there looking for a job, there's plenty of them. Also reach out to recruiters. In my experience, the majority of them suck but I've had a couple really help me out. If you wanna go security, I'd say shoot for a security cert that has more name recognition. I plan on getting Cyber Ops but right now, most people don't know what it is or haven't even heard of it. It's hard to land a security job with no experience so the certs can really help you out. I applied to a ton of security jobs. None called me back or reached out to me until I had a security cert. Good luck. Just keep at it.

As previously mentioned, there's simply too much text. There's no way you should have that much text for service desk support. A bullet point should be 1 line.

Then don't. The typical summary usually summarizes to "I'm awesome and a great fit for your job" but you can't put that so you try to say it without saying it. Summaries are a great for executives with the memory of a goldfish but have no place in the modern resume.

Yeah, I personally don't put a summary or much fluff. Just stick to education, certs, and my job duties for the most part.

I had to take some sort term contracts to get off of the desk and eventually landed a FTE position and learned some strong skills. Stuck with it and kept rolling.....

NOC sounds like a great next move. Good luck!

here in the states it's very very location centric

I found 2 areas with a lot of networking opportunities plan on moving early 2019
Currently enrolling into WGU's IT - Security Program. Working on LPIC (1,2,3) and CCNA (and S) as long term goals and preparing for the Security+ and A+ as short term goals.

You can start using https://www.jobscan.co/ to compare the resume with the jobposting.Highly recommend that you put your resume more minimal in the design, remove the colors and put bullet points.Hope that helps,Good luck! PS: I'm also living in Toronto. Regards!
