SCYBER or CCNA Security?

Hello all,

As always, I like to begin by saying thank you to each and everyone of you. I couldn't have gotten half of the certs I have now if it wasn't for your opinions, guides, and advice about certifications.

I have a few questions and I'm posting here since I didn't see anything about specialist certs:

1. I'm about to take my CCENT. I don't care much for CCNA R&S and just want to do security. Should I do CCNA Security or SCYBER?

2. Can anyone recommend a book for the current version of CCNA Security? I'm seeing bad reviews all around for the official book and not seeing any better with other brands.

3. Does/has anyone have both CCNA Security and SCYBER? If so, what is your experience and pros/cons of having each cert?

    Hello all,

As always, I like to begin by saying thank you to each and everyone of you. I couldn't have gotten half of the certs I have now if it wasn't for your opinions, guides, and advice about certifications.

I have a few questions and I'm posting here since I didn't see anything about specialist certs:

While I don't have my SCYBER certification I can maybe answer some of your more CCNA Sec. related questions. Obviously, Cisco is going to make you take the CCENT before anything else but I honestly dont think it hurts to have your CCNA R/S as well. There were somethings in the CCNA Sec. that they expected you to know in terms of R/S but I don't remember how much the CCENT covers. Also, you are correct about the OCG. I used it sparingly and instead used a combination of CBT Nuggets, Chris Bryants videos on Udemy and IT ProTV. Keith Barker provides some really great notes in his files for the CCNA Sec course in CBT Nuggets. I also used the 31 Days Before Your CCNA Security Exam book which was a great summary of what was covered in the videos. Some of the Transcender practice test questions provided by CBT was also really helpful. Hope that helps somewhat. Maybe someone with the SCYBER cert can chime in as well.

    What Fulcrom45 said.

CBT Nuggets, including the accompanying documents Keith Barker provides, along with the Boson practice test is how I passed. Boson does a great job of explaining why the correct answer is correct and wrong answers are wrong for each question. The simulation questions in the Boson practice test were good practice as well.

You should seriously consider the CCNA R&S and at least training on the latest Cisco FirePower modules. You'd be surprised how often I get asked to audit Cisco machines during an investigation.

SCYBER is Cisco CyberSecurity Specialist and requires no prereqs, though it recommends CCNA Sec knowledge
"Designed for professional security analysts, the course covers essential areas of competency, including event monitoring, security event/alarm/traffic analysis, and incident response."

CCNA Security is a full CCNA and requires a CCENT at least as prereq
"With a CCNA Security certification, a network professional demonstrates the skills required to develop a security infrastructure, recognize threats and vulnerabilities to networks, and mitigate security threats. The CCNA Security curriculum emphasizes core security technologies, the installation, troubleshooting and monitoring of network devices to maintain integrity, confidentiality and availability of data and devices, and competency in the technologies that Cisco uses in its security structure."

As I've seen it described before; CCNA Sec is CCENT + some firewall knowledge + ASA GUI

I just checked Cisco's website. SCYBER is being retired. CCNA Cyber Ops will pick up the mantle.
