New site, first thoughts?

I like the new design, however it will take a bit of time to get use to where everything is. What is everyone else making from the new site?

My only concern is the discussion approval on the certification forums. Your post now needs to be approved before it can be posted. While I like the idea that this will remove spam and **** advertisements, it could possibly have a bad effect on users looking for final advise before their exam. For someone who lives in the UK, does this mean I will need to wait until late-evening for my posts to be approved?

Not sure if anyone else is having this issue?

Hey @Skyliinez92! We are not requiring approval. In your case, akismet flagged your post and it was put into spam. I've approved them and they are live now. Sorry about that!

No problem, thanks for the heads up! It may take me a few days to get use to this new design

Is there a way to delete my own posts? Just looked on the main discussion page and it looks as though I may have duplicate posts...  :s

Will there be a post level or threshold where after so many posts a user is "considered" legit and doesn't have to worry about spam flags unless they were actually reported for spam? For instance Skyliinez92 has 619 posts and would be considered a quality poster before the move on the other hand a new account that is dropping multiple posts in multiple forums at a relatively quick or trolling pace would be up for some type of flagging or moderation. Although I've been a member a number of years I have a relatively low number of posts in comparison. I visit the site almost daily for the most part however, I tend to only post when I'm close to taking an exam so I would hate to fall in a moderation time warp in the 11th hour. CEH will be my next undertaking and I'm sure I'll be reaching out for last minute encouragement

How do you prevent yourself from falling into the moderated time warp? Will there be a threshold where you are considered a valued poster? for instance Skyliinez92 currently has 619 posts and would have been considered a quality poster by the old standard but a new member that suddenly starts throwing rapid posts in multiple forums from an analytics/statistical standpoint may be considered a bot | troll | spammer and deserve to have posts vetted. Although I've been a member for about 6 years (switched accounts in 2014) I have a relatively low number of posts in comparison. I visit the site daily in for the most part but I generally only post close to when I'm taking exams. CEH will be my next undertaking and I would hate to fall into the moderated black hole when I'm looking for the 11th hour pep talk.

I have a call with Vanilla later today to further refine moderation settings and permissions. I agree -- I would like for you to have the ability to delete your own posts, and for senior members to bypass some spam settings.

We do have "flood control" enabled, which prevents bots/trolls from, well, flooding the forum with posts.

I'll report back with updates. :)

PS -- good luck on your CEH!

Hi, I haven't been a member of TechExams that long, and I always am asking questions and I always get good responses back. I really enjoy this place and have been watching to see what has changed this morning and I love what was done. I personally haven't ran into any issues but I'll be sure to update an admin if I run into something drastic. I really enjoy the new look, it is very inviting and pleasant. Thanks for all of your guys hard work, I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say this, we really appreciate what you do.

    Hi,

I like a new look! As everything new it takes some times to learn how to work around this new look, but in general, it is much better!

I am currently pursuing Network+, Security+, then CCENT, and CCNA.

    Keep up good work!

I'm sure it is just something I need to get used since I don't love white backgrounds, but do the margins around the posts seem large on the sides to anyone else?

To say that I was surprised last night when I saw the new design would be an understatement.  It will definitely take some getting used to.  Hopefully this is the start of a whole new era for TE.

Couldn't see the 'certifications' area on posts so I just moved them into my signature. I know you can list your certs under your profile settings but these don't seem to appear like they use to.

The narrow area for content has come up a few times in different places now. I already sent this to our development team to see if we can give it one more width increase for wider screens.

FWIW we didn't totally shoot from the hip though, this width was done for a reason; optimal character account for readability (https://baymard.com/blog/line-length-readability).

But to be fair, im the guy who loved the "Yahoo Mail CLASSIC" style....

Definitely took a long time to get used the new Yahoo mail! lol.  I still like using the classic as well though.   (Prefer the black background on there)

On here, I feel the font size might be one size too big and margins a little too big on here which will annoy some people imo.  (And the white background.)   One or two comments can take up the whole screen.

But change is usually a little uncomfortable at first.

Does anyone else find it very annoying how narrow this article about line length readability is?   :#

Back on the certification track again - just in time for the new site.  While the old site looked.... well.... old.  I was fairly familiar with it.  I am sure I will get used to the new look and feel quickly.  I am sure this was over due so good job to those that did the work.

I am not digging the new site. The center alignment of posts is very off putting. I think you were trying to go for a Reddit feel?

I do miss the 'latest posts' link that used to be on the left hand side of the screen.  Otherwise, I do like the clean look.  Getting used to it. ;-)

Sorry, we moved and renamed that. It's now in the RIGHT side and called RECENT DISCUSSIONS

Initial reaction is that there's a LOT of wasted screen space. The other thing I noticed right away was the discussions on the front page don't show which section the post was under. There are often times where the subject/post only makes sense if you know which forum it's under.

I'm old, and have been in and out of many communities over way too many years, so I'll withold much opinion until I live with the site for a while.

But I can summarize my initial thoughts: This looks and feels more like a blog comment page (without the blog post) than a forum for discussion, to me.  In fact, the "Post Comment" button kinda reinforces that belief. And with it, comes a certain level of how I may treat it or think about it...

We'll certainly refine the forum theme as we go along -- keep the feedback coming.

It's also super helpful if you can share examples of some of your favorite layouts. I'd love to check them out!
