As in, promised a technical role but it turned out to be a call center?

I've never applied for a customer support / help desk position. All but my current job sprung "as the subject matter expert on blah blah system, you might have to take a ticket from time to time" on me. They all ended up being at least 25% help desk. But no, I've never been tricked into a full time call center gig.

yep, more than one and it sucked big time. Big companies...promised the world and the job turned out to be making sure everything was up and running - nothing else. I end up leaving those jobs quickly

I applied to a marketing position once. I wasn't in IT yet and being fresh out of college and having no marketing background whatsoever I was naive and thought I was going to help with ad campaigns or whatever. For my first day they paired me up with another employee to shadow him. Our job? Sell office supplies....door to door. I suppose that IS marketing in a way but I never came back.

Exact thing happened to me. Got called in for an interview when I was like 19 for a "marketing job" aimed at younger people. It was selling knife sets. First time I walked out of an interview. It was fun.

I have had jobs where the interviews went great. Asked the right questions and still, the job was not exactly as advertised. Like one that the PM never visited etc.

Oh dear God I hated working for Cutco. I was 19 with no car so I got a good workout doing door to door.

Basically I was told I would be doing technical support, but so far it's been mostly putting notes on tickets to indicate that other people have dispatched technicians.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether it would be better to stick it out and take advantage of the hours to get my degree from WGU, or just go ahead and seek something more technical to avoid being pigeonholed as a call center agent.

It's so much like a typical call center gig I'm even hesitant to mention it on my resume while coming back to IT after a brief hiatus.

I will suggest to continue working here and look for technical or work of your choice side by side.

I ended up there through a temp agency. In your experience, would it make sense to talk with the recruiter about the apparent mixup?

You can always talk or discuss whether there is a possibility of moving you to a different job profile. But if I would have been in your position i would have start giving interviews for core technical jobs whenever I have time.
