Degree/career advice

So im currently at a community college pursuing an associate degree since I have no clue where to start let alone have no experience in IT and all I keep hearing is "get certs" "just get certs" lately though I've been questioning whether will this degree be good enough for when I go look for jobs. My end goal is to get a CS degree from WGU, but that's awhile away. Besides that though do I have a chance at getting a job in IT with just an associate degree to start off with?

The most common advice is to spend two years at a CC to get an AA/AS and complete most of your GE, and then transfer to a 4-year to take the courses in your major. Many business accept an Associate as satisfying the HR requirement of having a degree. Also, you don't want to pay university prices just to take GE courses.

reddit is filled with people who failed at school and do not wish anyone else to succeed academically (as in "misery loves company"). Ignore them and do whatever you can to ensure your best chances of finding oppertunities that will make you happy and successful. Those self-proclaimed pundits on reddit will likely achieve neither.

And often they are the same clique that say that certification is futile and a waste of money. So maybe I am "dumb" from their point of view(college and tons of certs), but now I am making 6 figures salary doing what I love.

I gotta agree. Most whom I've worked with who were bad mouthing schooling or certifications as "a waste of time", typically have 1) Never completed certs or schooling and 2) Could benefit a great deal from studying for certs or a degree from what I've seen in their careers.

I'm not going to pretend that certs or a degree are the be all end all, but I've darn sure learned a lot myself from the practice, and know my skills are where they are in many ways because of the studies (and lots of work experience).

School help or guide you to build a foundation. I know many people say University is overrated and cost too much, but as you building your career... you might or very likely don't know a lot of things. This is the reason why MBA is so expensive. We (human being) do better job to study and obtain knowledge from lesson learning and experience. College offer that opportunity for you to test the water, but will limit lost. There are so many things you can do with CS degree. Of course, you got to be good in programming or at least know how that's work. Many CIO/CEO went back to do eMBA because they didn't get a change to learn. Not all degree and college are the same..., so this is the reason why people want to go to better school.
