Cross over or straight through.

Ok simple question that iam a bit confused over... in a few different sources i have read that for two cisco switches to talk they need to be connected with a crossover cable.

In my work place we have all dell switches. None of them are connected with a cross over cable...

so do u need to have a xover with cisco stuff or what?

It depends on weither or not the switch has either:

    a.) An uplink port
    b.) Auto-sensing

Yes normally you will need a cross cable to connect 2 switches,i dont know the dell switch but its possible a software config on a switch port could cross the tx/rx, or maybe there is an uplink port on the switch similar to what you can get on hubs,if this were the case you could connect a straight cable from the uplink port to a regular port on the other switch.
So what i'm saying is without any fancy vendor custimization you need a cross cable, after that it depends on what extra features the vendor adds to the box.
Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$
