Hello people - Its my first time on this forum but some of the stuff you all talk about here are really good and useful. So i was hoping you guys can help me too.

Im studying the mcsa 70-270 but havent done my first exam yet and was told it was easy by some of my mates but i stupidly forgot to ask them what chapters they specifically need to read to pass the Windows XP - 1st exam.

Ive got the microsoft book - 70-270 installing, configuring, and administering microsoft windows xp professional textbook by dave field
can any of you guys tell me what chapter i should learn from that book so i can get my first exam out of the way?

ps. congrats to all you guys that passed it - how many questions are there in the exams anyway - i know theres 4 exams altogether to become an MCSA specialist.

Thanks guys

Well, since you have the MS Press book on the exam you are looking to take, you want to study the entire book, not just one chapter.

You need to know a little bit of everything in that book.
    IT guy since 12/00

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)

Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...

I think the real thing is harder than any of the practice tests I had taken honestly.

Just be prepared to read a lot during the test. The questions were all pretty lengthy. You also have to watch carefully, they tend to throw in some trick questions/answers at you.

They give you plenty of time on the test for the amount of questions, so you do have time to relax and read each question and understand what they are asking before answering.

If you can get your hands on a different resource that would be good. I noticed another source covers the shortcomings of the first one you're reading. I used the Sybex 70-270 book and the MS-Press.

You say you have the MS Press book, I would say you have to know a little of everything there ( if not all ). It's quite thick I know, but the exam really covers the whole length of it.

Direct yourself to the exam objectives in the MS site first. I'm assuming you haven't yet, since you're asking for pointers. Be sure you're well-versed in all of the exam objectives and you're good to go.

    Good luck!

Looks like we had the same thought, today, davsp. Congrats on the pass, that test is a good hurdle to have overcome.

And abu01miah, I'm sure you'll do fine on this test. Just make sure you know all the topics in the MS Press books, and you get yourself another source or two, to study. I suggest something like the CBT Nuggets or TestOut, because they are video and lab-based, respectively, which will give you some visual and hands-on experience.

i am in a similar situation, looking to do the 70-270, I have decided to use VMWare to setup a test environment (seeing as its now free), plus I am using the following resources
      1. this very site ... the technotes and the video tutorials are great ... :D 2. an old Learn Key video training guide 3. going through the XP Resource Kit page
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/default.mspx
    4. XP Exam Prep 2 from QUE, updated for SP2
    5. MSPress XP Training Kit
    6. Sybex MCSE XP Study Guide

...in terms of the practice exams I have gone through, it certainly made me realise how much more to XP there is .. some stuff I never realised was part of XP and other stuff I have never felt like using IIS, ICS and ICF for example :D ... the bits I am having to get to grips with the most are mainly questions that deal with Active Directory
