Ethereal changes name to Wireshark

For those of us who use the Ethereal packet sniffer, it's now named Wireshark. Spinning-off the product with a new name was evidently the result of a trademark conflict between the creator of Ethereal and the owner of the Ethereal trademark itself. The latest release of Wireshark (0.99.2) is available from: http://www.wireshark.org/

Ethereal is still available from http://www.ethereal.com/. However, with the entire Ethereal development team moving to Wireshark, I am not sure if there will be any future releases of Ethereal.

Yes, thanks. Ethereal er um WireShark is the best bargain in town! Great product even if you had to pay something for it.

The only complaint I have about it is that the building of pre-capture filters could be made to operate like the post-capture filter, with a pick list and such.

I believe the name changed happen a little while ago. If you haven't used Ethereal yet you should !!!

The name changed happened in May, I believe. I only became aware of it when I saw a posting on digg.com. I had just updated to Ethereal 0.99.0, but there was no mention on the Ethereal web site of the split.

And I really like Ethereal too. It was the only sniffer tool I found that could make me give up NetXRay (http://www.netxray.co.uk/).

Wire...shark? What if we're on a WLAN?

If it didn't work with 802.11 then it'd be named Wiredshark.

But thankfully 802.11 is supported, so there's no need for a WirelessShark (although it would be a really cool if they did make one).

You should try tcpdump / windump...It's old skool and the filters are hella fun to play with.
