should i take this position?

today i went to a interview with intel for a tech support position, its a contract so therefore no benifits, i am asking for 15 - 20 dollars an hour..and now i am wondering whether i should ask for more..

the commute is around an hour (WITHOUT traffic) and two hours (WITH traffic), supporting up to 100 users for their computer problems

so do you think i should take this job or no ? they said they want me to work 40 hours a week, M-F 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, this doesn't make sense to me as that would be 45 hours a week.

What do you guys think? would you take this position if you are applying?

I'd say take it if you don't have any experience or if it is a pay raise from your current job. You have to take an hour off for lunch each day which gives you a 40 hour week. Some places give you half an hour as a paid lunch, but this is obiously one hour a day of your own time.

45hours, are you going to take a lunch? anyway,
Although it is with Intel, I dont think i would take it. 1 drive you are seriously going to hate it.(the drive)
... Pray about it? Sorry, wish I could help you more.
All I know is that I have an hour drive with bad traffic and it drives me nuts! 20 min with no traffic.
So its atleast 2 hours of traffic. 8 hours of working, 1 hour of lunch.
Total hours for your job is 11 hours a day. 13 if bad traffic.

There are pros and cons to this. If it's higher paid than your current job, it's a step up, either way. The commute seems like a killer, but it may be worth it, when weighed against other things. You should check to see if there's any possibility of going permanent once the contract is up. And, if nothing else, I'm pretty sure it won't look too shabby, having Intel as an employer, on your resume.

Aside from that, I can only recommend giving a bit of a push for the higher range of your salary requirement. It's not always a good idea to give a low-end, because some companies will simply give you the lower number. I tend to tell employers the highest I'm asking for, (in this case, $20 per hour,) and I keep the lower-end in the back of my mind. Chances are, they'll try to back me down to somewhere in the middle, and I still come out happy.

its no doubt that commute is a killer

but then the thing is i am NOT a Intel employee if i get hired..whats happening is intel have a contract with a tech support company, and if i get hired, i will be hired under that tech support company, not Intel.

if anyone need further classification, feel free to ask

would you have a big problem with moving closer to the job? that would make a significant difference. closer = less gas, less commute, less roid rage... er I mean road rage. =P

That's okay. I had the same experience in working for Kaiser Permanente. I was hired as a contractor, and I was told by the contracting company, by the hospital, and by countless hiring managers after that, to list Kaiser as my employer. Nine times out of ten, anyone looking at your resume will be more interested that you worked at Intel, not who put you there.

Incidentally, I used to put Kaiser as the employer, with a subnote that I was contracted by another company. I got told by the company that recently hired me not to do that anymore, and simply list Kaiser, since that's where I worked, and I reported to the IT manager there.

Well if i was u i would go for it 200 %. I wouldn't care about traffic or lunch breaks or holidays or whatever . All i would care about is the brand name "Intel". Experience and "brand name" matters here and no one is going to ask u how many hours did u drive in ur last job or how long was ur lunch break! Well it's up to u anyways

Although you will need to decide whether or not the commute is worth it or not (most of us who work in Orange County, even those of us who live here), there are a tremendous number of jobs in O.C., especially in Irvine. [you are not kidding about the cost of housing in Irvine, and the rest of the beach cities]

I have no idea your resume, your certs, or experience, you might just take a drive through Irvine, and write down all the company names you might like to work at, and then go to thier web sites and look for a career link.

The company I work for seems to have Tech Services (I guess that's supposed to be more than just Tech Support :D). And don't be frightened by the requirements, because there are only a small number of guys down there (they're on the first floor) that have them all.

    Technical Support Specialist
    Department: Technical Services--
    Apply for this position online

We seek an individual that has demonstrated 2 to 3 years professional experience in (most but not all of) the following areas*MS and Linux Operating Systems (installation, configuration, troubleshooting), SQL & Oracle Databases, IIS and WebSphere, light programming knowledge of .Net (C# or C++) or Java. In addition to these skills, good verbal and written communication and Customer Service skills are essential. The role entails phone and email support to our external reseller and distribution channels for our proprietary Document Data Capture suite of products. All support is based from our Irvine, CA, Corporate HQ. If you need a challenge, want to learn and improve your skills and are not afraid of hard work, then this is the job for you.

One great company to work for I might add. (Note: I'm NOT in HR/recuitment or anything like that, I work in their Professional Services Department, which I believe is also hiring)
