2sweet292sweet29 Member Posts: 14 ■□□□□□□□□□
I have been offered an entry level Help Desk Specialist position with the usual job description....the company is offering me 13.47 per hour is that low r should I ask for more? This will be my first job in the IT field....

Any opinion is appreciated :)

Oh and I only have a Network+ certification currently working on A+ and MCP if that helps!

Its a fulltime position with benefits, they say that their SA is relocating to Houston in six months, and I may be able to take his position if everything works out....all in all the company and people sound like good people...what do u think!

That's not a bad starting pay, at all, for an entry-level position. If you work hard, keep studying, and get more education/certifications, that number will go up pretty quickly. Congrats on the potential job, and good luck.

I dont have much to say about the pay....not familiar with us job market...but a full-time position with room for advancement sounds attractive already....

Yes the pay is low, but you must have good reasons to accept it. It's a means to the end. At the end of the day, you must put a positive spin on things, especially if you've explored all possibilities. Good luck

i dont know how much you guys over the pond are paid, but i am in the UK, and i am paid a similar rate about £7.40 and hour. which is poor from my view as i do the same work as everyone else on the helpdesk and they are earning about £10K more than me. but hey, its a start. the way i am looking from my point of view, is, i am getting hands on, paying my own way and earning certs and hopfully a degree, and by the time i am in my mid twenties i will be in a more promising position..so i could stay (if the oppurtunities are there) or move on. you never know whats gona happen anyway so do your best to make your CV look the GREATEST!

remember certs and degrees are amazing things to have but EXPERIANCE counts just as much!

so just stick in like i am as we young ones have time on our sides (at the moment lol) and it will pay off! - at least i am hoping lol. - i know it will.

ask anyone who is in the business who is in advanced positions - everyone has to start somewhere! and dont be scared to go to job interviews! even if you get turned away because it is invaluable experiance! i.e.get feedback in where you went wrong, where you could improve etc etc!

    Edit:

if you can also do a degree aswell as your certs would be an advantage depending on what you wanna do. unfortuanetly for me i never really considered certs until i started my degree as it followed certain courses. but a degree can open up so many doors a cert cannot. remember most ppl who get degrees in a subject never go onto specialise in that area but it proves you can work at a high level and go into management etc aswell.

just a thought really, not all people will agree but a degree is for life and IS NOT the easiest thing to get. it takes time and effort over a number of years. but from my experiance, my boss seemed impressed when he realised i had finished my first yr and i had done it off my own ambition. it also shows that i am serious in progressing no matter how young i am.

I would take it, it's not alot of money, but at the same time it's not the starvation wages that alot of companies pay entry-level grads. So, consider yourself fortunate and definitely consider the oportunity because others will offer less.

Well if you read your topic it says Entry level. So surely u wont get like many people expect an executive salary when working on an entry level position. Key thing is experience. Once you have it then u can move on to new jobs.

Be patient and work with what ever salary etc they are giving you. With experience and time u will get what u want. Watch one less movie each week or something surely that wont hurt and infact it's better than flipping burgers or cleaning which may give u few extra $ may be!

Go for it. I don't know why people nitpick over another dollar or two an hour when entry jobs are so hard to come by now a days. It's a foot in the door folks!

    Go for it!
My first entry level help desk job started at 7.50 per hour without bennefits... I just needed to get my foot in the door.

Sounds to me like a good deal for an entry level position.
