IP addressing

Okay, I'm studying the IP addressing thingy, and the class of Networks,
so I decided to do an IP look-up, and came up with the following....

216.12.219.37--techexams.net

Based on it's first number, can I safely say it's a class C address ?

Subnet Mask Bit Pattern for class C is.
255.255.255.0

So the the id, of this network is 216.12.219 ?

And you guys can only have 254 host ?

yes.

yes. Although this is not always the case, the network address could have been subnetted, e.g. 255.255.255.252... (subnetting beyond the classful boundary is not part of Network+)

And you guys can only have 254 host ?

No... our dedicated server is in a network (216.12.219.0 255.255.255.0) at one of the largest host in Texas. I did reserve a couple of extra addresses in this range/network, but most of the 254 addresses are used for other people's servers.

At a hosting farm, not a corporate LAN...

there is no 'all'... this server has it's own IP, and is the only server using that particular IP. The other available addresses in this range are also web servers (or DNS or mail servers), or are used to create multiple sites on one webserver each with its own IP address.

Our server (the subnet it is in) has a routed connection, not a translated connection. This is the most common way to connect web servers to the Internet at ISPs and hosting providers.
