no vlan commands on 2900XL switch

i just got a 2900XL Catalyst switch and im trying to configure some vlans, i know on a 2900 switch you use the vlan database command from the privlidged exec mode, however nothing is working... the IOS version is 11.2 here is the commands i have typed in.

so yea as you can see i have tried alot of different commands.. i can do show vlan brief and show vlan id commands and get an output but cant configure any... am i missing something or do i need to ipdate the IOS or what?

You could try tracing out what commands are valid by typing V[tab].

Manipulating the database directly though appears to be becoming obsolete

I believe the test is based on 12.2.

Sure. Right after you pay the relicensing fee and buy a SMARTnet contract. That would be the only legal way to upgrade your IOS. However, since the 2900 XL's are in EOS/EOL status you may not be able to buy a SMARTnet contract at any price...

Which model number, exactly, is this anyway? The standard edition of 11.2(

SA4 does not support all 2900xl models. Can you post the complete sh version output?

The only difference is that you only have a 12 port model but the IOS is identical.

I also noticed that you are running the standard edition and not the enterprise edition. I wondered what was wrong in your original message because the very first command should have changed the prompt to

When it did not there was no point in going further.

Now you are in a gray area. Cisco dropped support for your model May 30 2005 which was five years after the last one shipped. While you could load enterprise IOS on the 1900 series switches and stretch the life, on the 2950 switches they put in a hardware lock to keep the plain models from loading an enhanced image. I did not know that when I bought my first 2950 which originally alerted me to be very careful after that. Whether you can put enterprise on a WS-C2912-XL-A is unknown to me. Until someone says that they have done it I am sceptical. Whether a 12.x standard image will solve your problem is also unknown without more digging on Cisco's site.

My 2924's are model "WS-C2924C-XL-EN", notice the A versus EN. That is the model number that replaced the A series. If your employer has an account you can probably download an image that way or find a Cisco partner and see what your options are since this is for study and not for production.

an A is an EN AFA cisco is concerned WRT images. Great, I just drove up the price of 29xxXL-A switches on ebay

But only an A with 8 Meg which his show ver says his is. You will have to ask the seller on ebay which one it is since a 4 Meg switch can not have memory upgraded you would be restricted to standard IOS only. So according to that link if he can find the image that should solve his problem.

Cisco sometimes makes information very hard to find and facts buried in minutia.

I believe all A's are 8 meg. That's how I read that document.

Speaking of Cisco burying info. I found that document while trying to find if I could upgrade a 4mb to 8mb.

You are right, I misread it. Release 12.0(5)XU and higher consolidates all 8meg model switches. So people just need to make sure that they don't buy a 4meg model or they are stuck at 11.2(

SA6 with no upgrade path. Nice of them to let anyone download that version but the 12.0 versions require a Smartnet login.
