Very interesting article keatron. I think its a classic example of "dumpster diving" risks. Imagine what if an attacker got there first. icon_eek.gif

Yup. Human error (or ignorance) is the one thing no amount of firewalls, policies and anti virus can guard against.

Anyway, it's okay, because they "deeply regret" the incident. icon_scratch.gif

The headline and first few paragraphs are a tad misleading. At first glance, you would think tapes were thrown in the dumpster intact for anyone to pick out, but in fact it is believed they were destroyed by compaction.

However, at the very least they should be bulk erased with a degausser, then physically damaged beyond use by compaction, incineration or shredding.

I am sure there's more paper information out there that can be more easily and probabily had than what's on those tapes.

Fire is the only sure way to destroy any media. The problem is in controlling the fumes. Those backyard leaf burners they have in the Northern states work very well.

Right after ther world goes under from WWIV, thanks to those 26 Million military records that vanished with that laptop, late last year. That's when they'll learn.
