STOP ERROR

jescabjescab Inactive Imported Users Posts: 1,321
Someone brought me their computer (DELL) and said it comes up to a blue screen when they try to start it.

I turned it on and it came up to a blue screen with a stop error as follows.

STOP: 0000218 [Registry File Failure]
The registry can not load hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\software

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks!

Sounds like a corrupt registry. Check this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us

Perform a repair using the OS disk. This should correct your problem. AD

I booted to the cd and went into the recovery console and did a
CHKDSK /r then a CHKDSK /p then rebooted and it worked.

No problem. I have seen this problem before in the past. I would check the last program the user attempted to install or websites visited. Some malicious programs attempt to alter or corrupt 2 files in that directory: software and system file. Which will render the computer useless until you can repair it.

Okay, this is going to sound stupid...
Does your "right" mouse button work?
Do you have a scroll mouse?
Try clicking the center mouse button/mouse wheel. Then see if your drag and drop works...

The right mouse button works fine.
I do have a scroll mouse. I clicked the center wheel and that did not help.

I am off the watch the STEELERS now.

I will try any other suggestions later.

This is going to sound stupid too... troubleshoot the keyboard. I had a user with a similar problem, and it turned out she had somehow gotten a staple hung up under her alt key.

Also, you really need to try to find WHY the software registry hive got corrupted in the first place. For example see if there are any disk errors in the event viewer for starters. It would really suck to hand the guy his computer and two days later have the exact same problem.
    IT guy since 12/00

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)
    Working on: RHCE/Ansible
Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...

Right-click Start > Properties > Start Menu Tab > Customize > Advanced Tab > check "enable dragging and dropping."

If that is ticked Dell's can have a "Dell Media Experience" installed that causes similar problems and this is removable under Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

    Try these. :D

First perform disk defrag and also check dsk for errors. I would re-install all original drivers to the computer. I would try a different keyboard and mouse (USB) to see if you are seeing the same problem. It is going to be very important you find the original problem. Check for the latest software installed. Then lastly, scan for malware (Ad-Aware).

I have scanned for spy-ware, malware and viruses. We are good to go in this area.

I will try a USB keyboard and mouse and see what happens.
