Hey guys,

Where would you set the ip address on a switch for management of the switch ? Specifically, from which configuration mode ?

you set the ip of a switch from vlan confiugration mode

switch>en
switch#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z
switch(config)#interface vlan 1
switch(config-if)#ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
switch(config-if)#exit
switch(config)#

if you are using 1900 switch, u have to configure it from the config mode and remember to configure default gateway for the switch too.

switch#conf t
switch(config)# ip address 192.168.10.10 255.255.255.0
switch(config)# ip default-gateway 192.168.10.1

What about a Layer 3 Switch - 3550 or 3750. I know thats beyond the scope of the CCNA....But would you have a management IP for VLAN1 and a default gateway?

in a word yes, it doesnt have to be vlan1 thats the native vlan by default.
