This is one of those guys who needles you about anything and everything, even if he told you to do it or your not involved with what happened. Its prettymuch to cover his ass. I've already let him know where I stand up front and let him know I'm not down with that crap, I dont think it phased him at all. The one dude who's been there for four years is on the verge of a breakdown, for real. Needed: tips on handling a slippery son of a (hush). This type of problem leads to an attitude and eventually your job, but I like the job and want to stay. So that means "someone" else has to go.

In other situations, I'd advise that people work it out. Since you've already made your stand, I'd say leave or be prepared for your job to be more battle, scheming, sneaking around, backstabbing, than actual IT work. It will consume your thoughts - day and night and spill over in to your life outside of work.

If you're staying, enjoy the fight - it's amazing what length people will got to just to win or be right. Seriously, good luck here - you're going to suffer and learn some pretty hard lessons. I really hope it's worth it.
There are only 10 types of people in this world - People who understand binary and people who do not.

Yea your right deneb829, I dont get into all of that though. I'm to cool for all that funny stuff I just want to do my job and cover my ass. My theory is if you stay solid and do your job the people screwing up around you will make you look good. Dont get me wrong the guy likes me, but I want to be very careful.

In the sme sitution i would ask for everything by email, if he asks you to do something say "ok,please send me a mail for clarity" and when your done send him an email with all details. This should sort everything out easy, i've worked with snakes before and emails are the way to go.
Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$

Another thing you can do is since you said you've made your stand, you do your job right, and feel like he's picking on everyone because **** happened, first of all, he's not the right person for that job. What I would do is document everything he does as far as picking on everyone for no reason and bring it up to his boss or HR. Like you said, the guy that has been there the longer is on the verge of a breakdown because of your boss. I don't know how many people are working for this boss but I'm sure the company would rather look at replacing one guy that doesn't do his job well then to replace most of the team because of that one incompetent boss. I would also try to have backing from your other peers so that your complaint carries more weight.

Oh and yes, try to do everything by email so you have concrete stuff instead of just verbal since that would be a he said/she said issue.

    Time to move on.

Really, you can document everything and anything you want. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to do it.

So, either grow thicker skin and just do your job. Or move on. There are other companies where the petty high school crap doesn't happen (though I've seem to found many over my years). I tried the document route and agree its a good thing, but as I"ve grown older...it's not worth my energy. Soon you'll find your thinking about work in your free time just to be certain you haven't forgotten something. THEN who do you present it too? When? It can get spun back on to you that if you hadn't spent so much time documenting everything...YOU would have been more productive.

So, I'd just slip away quietly and look for something else before you leave outright.

If your boss is like most IT managers, might I reconmend a program called swapper.exe. Switches his left and right mouse buttons at random intervals. He'll never figure it out.

(Of course, I have NEVER EVER done this to a person who has pissed me off)

Do what ed_the_lad suggested, in the mean time start looking for another job, there is no need to be miserable.

All good advice (except the swapper thing:)). However, there is alot of potential with this company so I'm going deep. When I said slippery, thats what I ment. When he doesnt want things documented he'll call, when he does its by email. Slippery this one is. Although I could record phone conversations easily. I'm not stepping in that pile of doo. Theres a good chance that someone here works for the same company since its so global. I'm no rookie at the game, so I'm just looking for new tricks. I really enjoy the "Office Space" thing. Its alot of fun. I've been in the industry since I was 25 and I'm almost 40. I've seen bad leadership before. It is true, ALWAYS use email for documentation followed up with a CALL. I like to get the person on the phone and when they say they understand whats going on **click** goes the email. If it involves policy changes, always get documentation. Keep it tight.

When he calls, tell him to send an email as its reminder for you becasue you use tasks and calendar. If not, try to setup some kind work log you both can use. If he goes against this it will only draw more attention to himself from other people. Hes a looser, play your cards right and you can take his job.

Keep a record of everything that goes on. Be glad that you have a job, I'll gladly trade my job hunt for your job.

If you need some real honest advise trust me always and always document things! God bless i dont have whingers or back stabbers but I have been into small problems before coz of NOT documenting.

No prizes for guessing that I keep a record of even my chat scripts (since that day) as well (let alone emails) that dates back to the day i installed that new version of messenger (but i disabled the date option so it will keep everything until i run out of 80 GB HDD space :P - chat transcripts are not that big tho)

And if u see some smart A$$ calling (to avoid keeping records) u one then tell them to email u as i am right in the middle of something or what ever excuse!

Dont quit ur job coz of 1 smart a$$ !

Because others cannot find work does not entitle him to be grateful for having a miserable prick for a boss.

As others have noted, keep the documentation. If he refuses to write follow-up E-mails or acknowledge receipts, start a log and keep copies of your sent E-mail.

But when to present it all? If and when you think you get a bad review. Unfortunately, some companies are so anti-employee this won't help. But it would be one of the better opportunities to present your documentation.
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

    Garv,
Actually it does a ton of people myself included would trade for a "****" boss. Bosses come and go nothing is permenant. The important thing is having a job. I have worked for major assholes and great bosses, both times i smiled and did my job. Keep documents and your set.

The point is be thankful for what you have cause it can disapear real fast.

Pointers from the military which is the king of CYA (cover your A##)

    1) Document everything in a log
    2) Shadey stuff ask for clarification in e-mail do exactly what your told
    3) Wierd wrong orders ask your supervisor to clarify if not ask his supervisor
    4) Do the right thing and be efficent.

Btw nothing is permanent and remember there are tons of people who will gladly take your place.

I am thankful for the things I have no control over- my health, born in the usa, family....but my career is controlled by me and my actions. I understand what your saying though.
