ip address
MALLYG34
Excuse i know this may be a dumb question, but i dont see it anywhere in my cisco press book for the intro. I see ip address like 199.1.1.100/24. What does the 24 mean after the ip address?

Hey Mally.
The /24 is known as a slash prefix and dictates the numbers of 1's in the subnet mask. In the case of /24, there are 24 consecutive 1's in the mask, so the subnet mask is 11111111 11111111 11111111 00000000, or as we are more used to seeing 255.255.255.0 which is a default mask for a Class C IP address. Think of it as a shorthand way of presenting the subnet mask.
Hope this helps.

It means the first 24 bits in the mask are set to 1, as in:
11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000
which is the default class C mask 255.255.255.0
