hardware vs. software

I really enjoyed studying for the hardware more
than the software because I could easily remember
things like the "Laser Printing Process" Cleaning,
Condition, etc...

Studying for the OS system is very confusing because
it is necessary to remember hundreds of different
scenarios under 5 different operating systems.
I don't know of any Mnemonics or other tips for
use with the OS. I understand it is necessary to
grasp all these OS's because as a tech you will
encounter each of them, but it is still very confusing.
Are there any Mnemonics or tables for organizing
the tools and paths necessary for troubleshooting
each system. Thanks
