Im subnetting use the 256 rule.My question is, is there anytime that the 256 rule does not apply. I have an address such as 192.168.200.1/28 on th router ethernet interface and 192.168.200.2 on the pc. It seems that the 256 rule is not working on these ip address to find the subnet.

/28 = 255.255.255.240 i.e. 16
0,16,32...192,208
So the subnet is 192.168.192.0
Range is 192.168.192.1 -> 192.168.207.254
So the addresses you have above are within the range so you have no problem! 256 rule works, i didnt know there was a special name for this procedure.Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$ -

I didnt see how you got that subnet with the 256 rule. I know how to get wth the boolean nd but that takes to long.Anyone living in New York looking for a study partner for the CCNA. Email me at JSlade@schools.nyc.gov. -
EdTheLad Member Posts: 2,111 ■■■■□□□□□□ops! i was using a /20 mask, with a /28 mask it means first subnet is 0,second 16,third 48 etc from 256 rule.
So the host range is 1 -> 15, so 200.1 and 200.2 are in the same subnet.Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$
