Have you gone into your TFTP server and configured security (solarwinds: file->configure->security tab)? Can it transmit and receive files (if you're using SolarWinds)?

How big is the new IOS and does the router have space for it?

Are you on the same subnet as the TFTP server? Can you ping it from the router?

If you're not on the same subnet, you may need to define a default gateway since you will lose routing.

Then you need to trouble shoot the network connectivity issue, rather than a TFTP issue. If you can't talk to it on the network, you can't TFTP.

    Cable? ACLs? VLANs?

Are you on a network? Directly connected with a crossover cable? Transceiver lights?

What are the IP addresses and subnet masks? Anything in the arp cache on the TFTP server or Router (can they see each other at layer 2 and find each other at layer 3)?

    Hi Mally,

Try assigning an ip address to the router (like 192.168.1.1 /24).

Assigning an ip address on your pc (like 192.168.1.2 /24)

Connect to each other like this

    ROUTER----SWITCH
    PC
    or
    ROUTER----CROSS OVER CABLE----PC

Try temporarily disabling your anti-virus on your desktop- or whichever achine has tftp server. Just to rule out that layer. Then work your way down. I've heard of this before and Anti-virus programs such as norton sometimes denies a ping and even connectivity from certain hosts.....seeing that tftp is a program also...it seems feasible to behave like that.

MALLYG34, is the only connection your Cisco router (the one you are trying to update) has to any machine on the network via a console cable? Becuase that is the impression I got from your last post. If so, this is not a network connection so tftp would not work over the console connection.

Please provide a simple diagram of your network.

Sorry for not replying but i have already solved this problem. What i was doing wrong was using a straight cable from the transciever on the router to my laptop. Didnt know i needed a crossover cable.

That's a handy thing to know for the CCNA exam. You will most sertainly have to know how to propperly cable internetworking devices. The only reason you don't have to use a crossover cable with most home DSL and Cable modems (there are manufacturers like Zyxel for example, that use crossover cables) is that the uplink port on the modem is "crossed over."

    Router to host: Crossover
    Console to router: rollover
    Switch to host: straight through

Just remember that DTE to DTE is crossover and you'll be fine.
