291 -- Problem in RRAS (Relay Agent) for DHCP 291

Subject :: Help required in Problem relating to MCSE RRAS (Relay Agent)

I am facing the problem in Relay Agent of Routing and Remote access console sub feature. I have the course material provided by MS press and Sybex Inc but i didn't find complete practical in that regarding Relay Agent. I would be thankful to you for your kind Reply

MY Problem Senario ::

I have 3 PC's for My Practical of Relay Agent.I want a PC on other subnet without having DHCP Server to forward the DHCP brodcast Request via Relay agent to the PC in its subnet to the DHCP server on the other subnet . My settings are as follow:

Server 1 : DC (Contoso.com) + DHCP Server having 2 scopes in Super Scope
e.g 1 for 172.16.x.x
2nd for 192.168.5.x
IP 172.16.4.1 255.255.0.0 ::
Gateway 172.16.4.1
DNS 172.16.4.1

Server 2 :: Relay Agent in Contoso.com but diffirent IP with 2 Lan Cards
(WAN) NIC 1 = IP 172.16.4.1 255.255.0.0
Gateway = 172.16.4.1
DNS 172.16.1.1
(LAN) NIC 2 = IP 192.168.5.3 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.5.3
DNS = NIL

Client XP 1 = Connected Directly to Server 2 Via Crossover cable to its NIC 2
NIC = IP (Obtain Automatically via DHCP on the other Subnet)

Do you have the DHCP Relay Agent installed on Server2 in RRAS?

Also, you can try changing the gateway on Server2/NIC2 to 172.16.4.1.

First of all, IP on Server 1 and Server 2 is the same. That will conflict.

Second of all, change the Gateway IP to 172.16.x.x range. May be pointing to the DC. Remember, for the client to get IP from Server 1, LAN card 2 has to talk to LAN card 1 on Server 2, and then talk to Server 1.

I also think you will need to have NAT enabled on Server 2. It's easier if you give 172.16.x.x range to LAN card 2 on Server 2.

Good call on the duplicate ip's for server1 and server2. I think he typo'd the ip address for one of the servers or he would have known right away of that problem.

NAT won't be necessary, though enabling wouldn't hurt. I think it's the gateway address on server2/nic2.

I have checked the problem and changing the NIC 2 Gateway didn't solved the problem ... i think that RRAS Routing we enable so 192.168.x.x subnet it self is able to communicate with 172.16.x.x subnet .. so no need of NAT here but i think that server 2 should have no ip add starting with 172.16.x.x range ... may be it will solve the problem ....

why there is not even a single example in the book of MS Press
and in the book of Sybex even to give any complete example of the Relay Agent ..... nor i found on the Internet .....

Kindly there is my request if any body have an example of complete practical of Relay Agent in RRAS in document form or the link on the internet or any means... so plz send it to me ........ i would be thankful to you all

or if try this problem at completing at your end weather it may help me and clear other's having Relay Agent problem......

I know you probably did, but I have to ask:

Did you configure the properties of the Relay Agent to point to your DHCP server?

Right-click DHCP Relay Agent, and then click Properties. On the General tab, in Server address, type the IP address of your DHCP server, and then click Add.

Dear I have made the Entry in Relay Agent which was in Srv 2 having 2 LAN Card ... i think there is LAN Card address setting looks wrong , could you tell me as i have given earlier the address i have provided in the LAN of Srv 2 and Srv 1.... if there is any rectification by you plz re-write the LAN Settings of Srv 2 both LAN Cards including Gateways for both

Below is your config, with suggested changes or comments in bold:

Server 1 : DC (Contoso.com) + DHCP Server having 2 scopes in Super Scope

Gateway 172.16.4.1 This is strange, but for a lab setting might be okay, this essentially tells him that all addresses are local. If you don't have a REAL default gateway, I would point this to NIC1 on Server2
DNS 172.16.4.1 Do you have the DNS service running on this computer?

Server 2 :: Relay Agent in Contoso.com but diffirent IP with 2 Lan Cards
(WAN) NIC 1 = IP 172.16.4.2 255.255.0.0
Gateway = 172.16.4.1 Again, use a real DG if possible, your router to the ISP maybe?
DNS 172.16.4.1
(LAN) NIC 2 = IP 192.168.5.3 255.255.255.0
Gateway 172.16.4.1
DNS = NIL

Make sure your scope excludes 192.168.5.3, 172.16.4.1, and 172.16.4.2. Also configure your scope options for the 192.168.5.x range to use 192.168.5.3 for the gateway for DHCP clients.
