i didnt want to bring the system offline.

    i dont it by -

    cd %systemroot%\system32 on the dc

    then setpwd

and changed the directory restore password.

will this establish what i want?

There are a few Linux distributions that are very good at recovering and changing passwords on NTFS partitions

The Directory Restore password is not the same as the admin password.

Additionally, the Administrator account on a DC is not a local account, but a Domain Admin account. If you currently know the password, just log in as Administrator and change it as you would any other account (ctrl+alt+del). If you don't know it, hopefully you have another domain admin account you can log in as and change the Administrator account password from ADUC.

Let me know if I misunderstood your question.

Why not bring the DC offline when there is little to no operations and change the DC admin PW? It takes literally 20 seconds with the right software...

SuperERD is a lifesaver and works on locked out PCs too. One of those tools that make the techie look really good.
