RIS help

Reading through the MSPress books about RIS installs.

Does the "network card" from Virtual PC 2004 support PXE? or is the RIS floppy capable of RIS'ing the Virtual PC?

Thanks Jason

    Thanks for the site.
Ill have a play with RIS and see how I go.
    Jason

Ok, after testing the boot disk image, it works good but there is a problem.
    It goes:
    DHCP ....
    No reply from a server
Press a key to reboot system.

I know that DHCP allocated it an IP address from the DHCP console on Server 2003.

Is there a way around this?

Have the DHCP and RIS servers been authorized in Active Directory?

Is there a router between the computer and the DHCP server that is not configured as a DHCP proxy?

Check the event log on the RIS server for any errors.
All things are possible, only believe.

    Hi
The DHCP Server and RIS is on the same computer.
There are no routers between DHCP and RIS and thus DHCP proxy is not used.

    DHCP/RIS is 192.168.3.2
    Router is 192.168.3.1

    DHCP is authorized in AD
But how do you authorize RIS?

I used the RIS setup wizard and clicked check for errors
It shows its been verified and no errors were deteched.
I click finish on that and it displays 2 ticks: 1) Starting required RIS services and 2) Authorizing DHCP

The event log for BINLSVC only has "RIS sucessfully read settings from the directory service"

I also have a massive load of errors in DNS event log however thats because it tries to dynamic update self with replication parters which are non-existent at this stage so I do not think that is relevant.

    Thanks

It might be something as simple as the client computer not being supported or having problems related to PXE.

I don't have a RIS server in front of me, but make sure the option "Respond to client computer requests" or similar is checked, and another one relating to not responding to unknown/unauthorized computers (or similar) is unchecked, otherwise you need to prepopulate AD with the client computer.

    Hi
    Thanks for the reply.
For some reason the respond to client request was unticked "or I forgot to tick it earlier"

Had to right click my RIS server and go to remote install tab.

Anyways, I have got that up and working now.
    Thanks
    Jason

Thats 1/2 the problem, now I'm getting file copy problems.
Probably just stuffed up image, and I did it in a rush so didnt really put focus on it (the RIS server setup)
Ill go over it again and get it fixed.
    :D
    Thanks
