Hello, I just recently graduated from a university from an IT program and I really want to get some certs under my belt and was thinking of getting the MCDST first. My question is how helpful are the classroom lessons or can I just buy the necessary books/kit from microsoft and study on my own and write the exams??

It all depends on your experience. Do you have any experience supporting users on XP? How long have you worked with XP, (not just used it, but actually dug into it and used the more advanced features.) I would say that your best bet would be to pick up the MS Press books for the exams, begin reading through them, and seeing how much of it sinks in.

While you're doing that, you'll need to make sure you're setting up a lab for yourself, install a couple of XP boxes, and do the projects that they tell you about in those same books. Hands-on experience is going to be the most crucial thing to have, in order to pass those exams.
