Career Question

Hey All,

A little background about myself. I have been in IT for 7 years. I have A+ and MCP (2000 Server). I have worked as a PC Tech, Field Tech (doing networking, installs), Technical Analyst, Web Admin/help desk, and now Help desk. I recently got a AS degree as network support specialist. At my current position I am getting exposure,training, and oppurtunity to with SAP R/3 and CRM. I really want a postition as Network Admin or Project manager. I have had trouble landing network admin or even networking type jobs. Can I use the skills I gain from SAP to help in a networking role? Also what certification/s would help me land a job in a networking position?

I don't know. Maybe get your MCSA and that might help.

sounds interesting because I am planning to get my associates degree in networking and I think I am going to have a hard time myself trying to find a job in the networking field unless I get a bachalors degree. So tell me is the pay for what you been doing so far good?

Maybe Security+ since admins need to deal with network security.

If you're not going to get a Bachelor's. I'd go for one of the high-level Microsoft certs to make yourself more lucrative.

Yes the pay is pretty good I have no complaints in that area. I would rather be working in networking and getting paid good.

I am going to school right now to complete my Bachelor's. I would like to get into networking though to have expirence directly with that.

Update: I did get my Bachelor's in Information Technology and am currently going after MCSA and maybe more. I have three more tests to go for my MCSA.

What kind of classes did you take for IT? It's my understanding that there is a lot more theory kind of classes. Is that accurate?

IS with an emphasis on security sounds good. Security is not going anywhere anytime soon. I took allot of liberal arts, business classes, and as many networking classes as I could. I did Exchange, Cisco (CCNA), Information Systems, Intro to DB, Intro to programming, Project management, allot of windows infrastructure classes. Those are all I can remember off the top of my head.

Down to two more exams 70-291 and 70-290 for my MCSA. Which is harder of the two? I passed 70-620 today.

To land networking job, I think you should consider CCNA

First off congrats! I think that you should get your MCSE and CCNA. Preferably your CCNP. You may have to relocate for other job opportunities. Good luck.
