OSI Layer Question

On what layer do we find a modem?

The Cisco Press test, places it on Layer 1. But I would think, Layer 2.

Layer 1 argument - it handles converstion of data on the physical medium
Layer 2 argument - A modem has a MAC address

Same argument as NIC. yet the same software shows the NIC as being Layer 2.

Input?

Aarroogk? icon_eek.gif Where did you find documentation to support this? I've been working with dozens of different types of modems for many years, I've never come across one that had a MAC Address.

In dial-up networking, your phone connection is assigned a virtual MAC address by the OS. Hope this helps. :)

actually, what you said really clarfied what I was reading. I got the imrpession that you needed a Mac address to establish a PPP connection, but rather it create an address.

    alright, think I got it.
