hi guys i have setup my home lab being practising for the exam, i come to a point where i want practise to setup ppp wan, using back to back cable i connected tow 2500 routers here is my config of one of the routers they are both configured the same :-
routerb#sho int s0
Serial0 is up, line protocol is down
Hardware is HD64570
Internet address is 192.168.10.130 255.255.255.192
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255
Encapsulation PPP, loopback set, keepalive set (10 sec)
LCP Listen
Closed: ipcp, cdp
Last input never, output 0:00:47, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Output queue 0/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 0 drops
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer
Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants
0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored, 0 abort
230 packets output, 4462 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 92 interface resets, 0 restarts
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out
180 carrier transitions
DCD=up DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=up
why is the line protocol down? and LCP is in listen state?
what am i doing wrong? i did setup one of the router clockrate
i have also setup the encap to ppp authentication to pap and set the username for both and password
thanks in advance

can i say thanks for ur quick replay really appreciated -
rossonieri#1 Member Posts: 799 ■■■□□□□□□□hello,
"LCP closed..."
did you use a PPP authentication?
if yes -- first unplug the cable from the routers -- set the authentication <remote-name><pass>
then plug the cable back see what happen.
make sure the clock rate set.

monkey_ninja3 Member Posts: 40 ■■□□□□□□□□Hey guys, im totally new to this, but just to expand on ppp, I got a few stupid questions that you could probably answer in your sleep.
Firstly, on the previous scenario, do the magic numbers show 1CB2F5 and the other auth is 1CB32A indicate the pap has refused access so the NLC cant go ahead?
I got a sim lab set up, and unless I state PPP, or RIP on them, the two Lans cant ping to each other on the different networks.
E.g
Router A can ping Router B
Router B can ping router A
pc 1 (connect to router a) can ping router A, but not b or pc 2
pc 2 (connected to router b) can ping router B, but not router 1 or pc 1
Now as far as my understanding goes, a routing protocol needs to be enabled for the two different lans to ping each other, even when they're is only 2 routers, right ?
Please correct me if im wrong.
But I dont understand why the default HDLC cant let the 2 routers ping each other, when something else is sticking out its other interface.
E.g1 pc1
E1<.R1.>s1
s1<r2 <--router 1 can ping router 2, but router 2
cant ping router 1
Eg2 r1s.. s1>
<s2..r2.e1>--- pc <--this time, router 1 cant ring router 2, but
router 2 can ping router 1
So everytime the router has somethin else coming outta its other interface, it cant be pinged by the router, any idea whats going on ??
Both routers could ping each other initially, just not when their other interface is being used - and when both routers are using both interfaces, they cant ping each other at all.. -
Darthn3ss Member Posts: 1,096sounds like you might have something configured wrong somewhere? i belive when i connect 2 routers they can ping each other, but not the networks on the other interfaces until a routing protocol or static routes are setup.Fantastic. The project manager is inspired.
