synchronous and asynchronous lines

Would anyone please explain to me what they are, and gove an example.

    In short, in asynchronous transmission the two nodes communicating do not negotiate the transmission before it takes place. The receiving device has to determine the clocking. There's a "synch" signal embedded within the data stream which lets the receiving end know the timing of the data.

    Synchronous is of course the opposite - The clocking is negotiated before transmission. To my understanding, synchronous transmission is usually only important if the medium isn't reliable.
