Tools for monitoring/analysing computers/networks?

Just wondering if any of you ever worked in a data center or place where the machines were monitored closely for issues. Any close suggestions?

As Non-Profit Technie mentioned, SMS and MOM are great products. A new version of MOM just came out called System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007. Also, the Sysinternal tools are excellent tools for monitoring/troubleshooting/diagnostics/etc.. You can find these tools here

The type of software you're looking for is either Nagios or ipMonitor, which is now owned by SolarWinds. Both Nagios and ipMonitor are capable of monitoring CPU time, hard drive space, NIC usage, POP3 and SMTP ports, various services, they can both do pings at regular intervals to check for connectivity, check HTTP and HTTPS, etc. . .

Wow, that's a nice list to check. ipMonitor, MOM sound interesting...is Nagios only compatible with linux boxes? Still a good utility to try out later, especially for free.

It will monitor every kind of box, be it Linux, Windows, Mac, whatever. . . the software just won't install on anything but Unix/Linux. According to their site, there'll be a Windows version coming. . . err. . . at some point.
