Switch question

in CCNA & CCENT
i just brought a netgear FS116 16 port 10/100 mbps switch connected my 2 PC's to Port 1 & 2.
For some reason PC2 can't see a default gateway.
I tried a loopback test that worked then I typed the ipconfig /all I don't see a gateway
but PC 1 gets internet connectivity.
I've tried connecting it to a different port and
I also bypassesd the switch and plug directly into the DSL modem but that didn't help.
I have tried a different cable. In device manager the adapter status is working
properly. In Network connection i repaired it .
I have disabled the firewall and anti-virus software. I know this is not a
CCNA question however it is network related so I was hoping someone
could help me with this. Any ideas, suggestions?
thanks,
-k

boyles23 Member Posts: 130Since you eliminated the switch and plugged directly into the DSL connection and it still didn't work, then I would lean towards the NIC. When it is connected do you see any lights flashing/working on the NIC? Throw another NIC in and try it, that would let you know for sure.

kadshah,
Questions:- What is the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for PC1?
- What kind of NIC is in PC2? Ethernet? FastEthernet?
- Do you get green link lights on the Netgear FS116 switch port connected to PC2?
- Which operating system is running on PC1?
- Which operating system is running on PC2?

"ping 127.0.0.1"
That should show you if the nic is good or not. -

georgemc Member Posts: 429It sounds like your service provider is using something similar to port security and is preventing PC2 from connecting. I'd guess a third PC wouldn't work either. You might try some sort of NAT.

Are you already using NAT on your LAN?CCNP | CCIP | CCDP | CCNA, CCDA

i couldn't get a 3rd computer to work
should i contact the ISP and ask them for help
or should i get into the DSL modem with my browser
and try to locate NAT functions? What exactly do you recommend I
do with NAT?
Right now I'm away from the 3 laptop but I remember the default gateway
being 255.255.255.128 off the top off my head I don't remember
what the IP is I'll look at it tomorrow. Yes I am using WINXP SP2
on all 3 laptops. (sorry i said PC before i meant laptop) I brought
a ethernet adapter for the laptop from Compusa. Windows didn't even
recognize the card i doubt it's that anyway cause 2 laptops are having the same problem
they are both new laptops. -

kadshah,
Questions:- Are you plugging the DSL modem into the Netgear switch?
- Have you installed the driver for the "ethernet adapter for the laptop?"
- Did the box or documentation for the "ethernet adapter" state that it is "Windows XP compatible?"

kadshah Member Posts: 388 ■■■□□□□□□□i tried connecting an old laptop to the switch it worked so something about
these 2 new laptops that are preventing it from getting connected. I suspect
maybe anti-virus software or firewall I had disabled it before but I will remove
it completely from the system when I get a chance. Yes I tried installing the driver
but for some reason that didn't work either. Well at least I know now the
it's not a layer 1 problem the switch and modem are working fine. -

You probably need to set up a broadband router (Linksys, netgear, etc.) that does NAT or get a second NIC for PC1 and enable ICS. I'd prefer the broadband router option myself. If you go with the broadband router you'll probably have to contact your ISP and let them know you replaced you PC and now have a different MAC address (the MAC of the router). Otherwise, if you go with ICS you'll just plug the current working NIC into the DSL Modem and the second NIC into your switch.kadshah wrote:i tried connecting an old laptop to the switch it worked so something about

Was this old laptop used previously on the same connection/DSL modem? If so, its MAC address may already be registered with the ISP. I suspect that they may limit the number of MAC addresses that can access your connection. Using the router or ICS as mentioned above should correct this, if it is indeed the issue.
Let us know how it turns out.
