    You may want to set up a TFTP server and copy one of your other router's IOS image to it.
    Then you should still be able to enter rommon on the router whose flash you erased, in order to copy the IOS image from TFTP.

    This may sound hard, but it will be a very good learning experience. I highly recommend it icon_lol.gif

    no big deal as long as you have a copy of the IOS.

    my advice, when you get into rom mon and start to configure network settings, leave capslock on.
    Fantastic. The project manager is inspired.

    Haha! I did this my FIRST DAY in CCNA 3... I had come off of a 3-month break from CCNA courses and I forgot the syntax for erase the startup config. I remembered "hey, the config is stored in flash, so ERASE FLASH must be the command!"

    Boy did I feel like an idiot... icon_redface.gif

    Oh and if you get stuck, just google up smth like "router ios upgrade" and follow one of the guides you find. I know that's how I learned about rommon, boot registers etc...
    Personally, I learn way better when I try to fix something I screwed up. Good luck and let us know how it went.

    Although I can't remember accidentally erasing the Flash contents on a Cisco device, when I got my first PC, almost 20 years ago, one of the things I did after only a week or so is "format c:", which was a great learning experience (having to re-install DOS, modify autoexec.bat and config.sys... and of course knowing not to do it again icon_wink.gif ). Every CCNA student should erase the Flash at least once for practice.

    Do it more than once and restore the IOS in different ways. I've done it 2 times, once using TFTP another using XMODEM (slow as hell icon_wink.gif)

    Never had the guts to try it using XMODEM. yet! icon_lol.gif
    One more thing I learned about flash the hard way was partitioning. It was when for the sake of curiosity, I switched slots for the 2 flash modules on my first 2501 with a 16MB image on them. I had to reload into 0x2101 to make them read/write, erase both modules then repartition them as one, copy back the image I backed up just in case, then go back to 0x2102. Great experience icon_wink.gif

    How about this....going to update IOS and erasing the flash and then finding out that you don't have enough memory to hold the new one and didn't back up the old one..........struggle, struggle and then success.. yeah that was me.. live and LEARN.

    It takes at least an hour to complete, and that's only if you can set the transfer rate high enough... Ugh. We had to do a lab exercise in one of my CCNA classes based on ROMMON/XMODEM. I think I started the lab, worked on something else, and finally came back about 2hrs later... I am not looking forward to that again anytime soon.

    Also turn another router into a TFTP, RCP, FTP, and even HTTP Server that you can download from.
    Now THAT I am going to try soon! Excellent advise icon_wink.gif

    That's exactly what puts me off. I am eventually going to try it once though.

    So aueddonline, how's that IOS restore comming out?

    It took me some time before I realized that I had to explicitly allow the other router to act as a tftp server. I couldn't imagine at all why it wasn't working.

    i've got the 2600 that's in rommon connected to the tftp server using an ethernet into ethernet 0 i've set some settings on rommon but not getting anywhere, i've got all the addresses on the same segment have a look.

    rommon 23 > set
    PS1=rommon ! >
    RET_2_RTS=
    BSI=0
    RET_2_RCALTS=0
    ip_subnet_mask=255.255.224.0
    tftp_server=172.16.96.22
    tftp_file=c2600-io3-mz.123-3.bin
    0=4
    tftp_checksum=0
    ethernet_0=172.16.96.31
    default_gateway=172.16.96.10
    ?=0
    ip_address=172.16.96.30

    i don't quite get how it's gonna know where to get the image and normally the roter wouldn't have an ip it would just be the interfaces, right?
    It's not connected to the default gateway ethier i've tried leaving that blank, because there is only one ethernet port on these routers i can't connected it to it's default gateway and have the gateway connected to the server, all confusing anyone with a brain out there, be my guest

    The variables names are case sensitive - use uppercase.

    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/471/76.html
    First, you must set ROMmon environment variables prior to the TFTP download. All variable names are case sensitive.

    You can view the ROMmon environment variables by using the set command, as shown here:

        rommon 3 > set
            PS1=rommon ! >
            IP_ADDRESS=172.18.16.76
            IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.192
            DEFAULT_GATEWAY=172.18.16.65
            TFTP_SERVER=172.18.16.2
            TFTP_FILE=quake/rel22_Jan_16/c2600-i-mz

  • mikej412mikej412 Member Posts: 10,086 ■■■■■■■■■■
    keep getting out of memory
    How much flash memory does your router have?
    How much DRAM memory does your router have?
    How big is the image your're trying to fit into that memory?
    What are you doing when you get the "out of memory" error?

    You didn't say how big the image is.

    So based on what you did post -- you can try setting the configuration register to 0x2142 (like for password recovery) and bypass the startup config. If it boots, then the problem is in your startup configuration.
