vmware player on a external hard drive

Went it comes to using a vmware player, can you load it on a usb external hard drive, and have it still perform like a computer or server.

    Yes.

    In fact, at VMworld 2005, Diane Green brought her desktop in the form of a P2Vd VM which was housed on an IPOD.
