Frame-relay question

In the real world what does the serial interface plugs into to establish a frame-relay connection? I know in a lb environment you would connect to a frame-relay switch but a in the real world, what would you connect it to.

    you would connect it to a "smart jack" or the service providers demarc equipment that would facilitate your connection to a frame switch back at your local co

    this would use a RJ45 connector

    Most of the time, the demarcation equipment will be a CSU. Channel Service Unit..This basically prepares the the Frame to transmit onto a T1 circuit. A CSU can terminate more than one T1 as well. It has many uses depending on the intelligence of the device. Things like loopback testing and T1 keepalives.

    Real World Scenario

    Telco
    >CSU/DSU--->Router
    T1 line

    In small businesses usually the router plugs into a CSU/DSU via the serial cables.

    If you don't have one, the Telco should supply one. You can rent one from them I think.

    Actually the image was from the poster above me. I just enabled the image in the thread instead of the link. Can't take credit for someone elses work. icon_wink.gif

    I'll take a picture of a Nokia D50 DSLAM remote line card shelf for you on Monday, when I'm back at work. It's connected via ATM to the CBX aggregator. In fact, I'll take a few pictures of some other ISP grade fiber equipment if you want.
